So I do contracted armed security for a municipal court. My co worker and I are the only guards there. Our company can send someone out to cover us, if we are sick or have vacation time.

The only stipulation being, one of us ALWAYS has to be here. If I take vaca time, he has to be here. They do this, because the fill-ins won't know how to open or close the building.

Anyways, my co worker is in the Army Reserves.
He only has drill once a month, but the dates seem to change without much notice. It seems like they switch it often. I know he has no control over this, and he can be arrested if he doesn't show up.

But if I request some time off 4 months in advance, HIS drill time shouldn't stop MY vacation time.

Oh, and my boss needs a month notice to approve any PTO.

I just don't know how I'm supposed to plan anything, going forward.

I've been here 5 years, he's been here 4 months. Yet I have to follow his schedule. Kinda fucked up.

Again. I know he has no control over the situation b

In my office it's whoever has their time off approved first. I realize he doesn't exactly have control over when the reserves call him in, but it's up to your employer to find a suitable solution.

You need more people. They also need to be physically fit, sounds like your co-worker is in shape, so he is gonna get what he wants. You can get sick though, there is a flu-virus going around. Have you taken your temperature?

The problem is, the people filling in won't have keys for anything, won't be trained on opening/closing procedure, etc.

That's why we only have one person gone at a time

Put your fucking foot down. It doesn't fucking matter if he's in the reserves. That's 100% not your problem. If he can't swing the schedule he needs to find a new job.

He was placed here by our company. And he's able to swing the schedule. Employers can't discriminate for that lol

But if you put in time in advance his schedule shouldnt matter. Your employer needs to figure something out. Not force you to change your vacation time because hes in the reserves. Thats his problem.

Not sure you'd want to go that route but there might be legal action you could take? Either way, I think a lot of this comes down on your employer. You might wanna interview around while keeping this job? Depends on how big of an issue this is to you. Sounds like it could be worse though it's clearly not ideal.

Where at? I have a horrible cough that I thought was from the California fires but I've been questioning if it's really just a cough.
