I post a picture online wearing a shirt that has the name of an area in my city.
I'm not from there, but I work there and I've been going down there to visit family for about 27 years. I put some cute hashtags and thought that was going to be the end of it. Then everybody is getting on my ass for posting the pic. How dare i, considering I'm not from there. Even family is on my ass. Is the whole turf thing legit? This is a poorer neighborhood, so are people just being protective of their hood? Should I just take down the pic? --- A proud wrestling Smark, because we know better than you. ... Clearly the reference means something and carries status as a 'cultural identifier' to people who are from that area. That's why they're dragging you for being fake and being something of a tourist. Not knowing about it is one thing, everyone missteps and people are typically willing to except apology/explanation if it's honest and sincere, and you're not always messing up one place or another. If you are choosing the shirt because it looks cool and you don't care about the larger context, even after people come out the woodwork explaining how you've possibly fucked up, then you might deserve that shade. And you'll keep getting karmic dividends every time new people discover the photo.
Should you take it down? If it's becoming inconvenient to leave it up or you're thinking on the issue changes to something more sympathetic to their criticisms then your actions should reflect that. Otherwise, if it's no real skin off of your teeth and you don't care, then what is even the point in asking? --- Whatever happened to standards? But I also work there, and felt since I am in that area for an extended amount of time, I was "one of them". Guess not. And I do care, of course.
