Cracked Articles hit this on the nose about living in a city. Regarding driving in a city:
It's particularly harrowing because when pedestrians have the right of way, they just fucking go. Considering how cold and cynical city-dwellers are supposed to be, these people seem to have supreme confidence in the goodwill and braking reflexes of their fellow urbanites.

Just this morning some ran out into moving traffic and right in front of me. There wasn't even a crosswalk.

In some big cities if you stand back and wait for someone to let you go (even if you have the right of way) youll be standing there for awhile. Calling their bluff and just forcing your way is the way most people do it.

Having lived in NYC, I never gave it a second thought doing this... but reading those two sentences definitely opened my eyes.

This is unfortunately true, a lot of the time your choices are to risk some idiot hitting you or to stand there for five minutes.

It does, but pedestrians (myself included) just walk even if its red light for walking, or just walk if the perpendicular traffic starts to turn yellow, assuming the cars will stop. Pedestrians also don't wait by the curb, and will just literally stand waiting on the road, making it more difficult for vehicles turning right (not that they can, because pedestrians walking on the other side makes it impossible, unless you scootch your car forward inch by inch and just push people out of the way).

And when it's winter it's just...unpleasant to wait for someone to let you through.
