It seems like we had a lot of serial killers in the 20th century, who all acted in secret, for extended periods of time without getting caught, mostly driven by sexual deviancy, macabre fantasies and hate for women, people like Jerry Brudos, Ted Bundy, Edmund Kemper would fall into this category.
But nowadays, we are living in an era where the bigger problem has become mass shootings. Like, once in a while someone will go on a frenzy and kill as many people as he can. People like Elliot Rodgers, Breivik or James Holmes.

It's interesting, serial killers would kill personally, it was way more hands-on, and they would take up time to build a long repertoire of victims, they'd have to live with what they're doing for a long period of time.
Mass shooters just do it in an easier way, just kill everyone quick and inpersonally. I think it is a reflection of the times, we want everything as fast as possible. A lot of people aren't into things for the long haul, lacking any sense of commitment.

What's your opinion on all this?

You know what makes me a rage? People who just proclaim things about trends in society with no data to back it up.

How quaint.

For guys like Ted Bundy it was like a (catch me if you can) game.

Maybe liked to challenge himself, his pursuers and victims.

Probably liked reading about himself in the news and papers.

I mean there was that 'regular' serial killer in Tampa that got caught just a few weeks ago. The one who shot to death 4 people or whatever. Definitely wasn't just a mass shooter.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/28/us/tampa-killings-seminole-heights/index.html

The scary shit about serial killers is they usually aren't caught even today. Mostly because of that common trope about them - they just target the severely disenfranchised who most people don't care enough about to report as missing. Like with random drug-addled prostitutes who might not even have a pimp.

Then you just have sociopathic murderers who are completely involved in the criminal underworld, like with mafia hitmen or whatever. Again, they're probably the most prolific serial killers, but they usually make a point of not killing 'affiliated' people, and, because of that and dumb shit like 'no snitching' a lot of them also don't get apprehended. Like with this guy:

Probably more well known for being the guy who turned on John Gotti than for being involved in NINETEEN murders.

Its extremely easy to be caught today with modern forensics. Serial killers would likely be discovered before they murder multiple times.
