Figured it's time to bring this back!

Thursday night previews were very strong for The Last Jedi - it pulled in about $45 million bucks, putting it 55% ahead of Rogue One (but still behind Force Awakens). We haven't even tallied in the midnight showings yet, but it's approximately the #1783 highest grossing film of all time before it's first day.

Most predictors suggest it will pull in between $210 and $220 million dollars this weekend, which plant it squarely in the #2 spot behind Force Awakens' massive $247 million weekend haul.

With a full Friday total, Star Wars has now grossed 104 million dollars for its first day. This is only $18 million behind Force Awakens' first day, and the second-highest grossing single day on record. For some perspective, that is 20% of Beauty and the Beast's entire run - currently the highest grossing film this year.

Numbers like that suggest we'll see a $215 million dollar opening.

Star Wars Episode 8 is currently the 620th highest-grossing film of all time after 1 day.

Possibly but we don't have Cinescore stats on that yet, and it won't affect the first weekend. Also, weirdly there's less competition for this one than TFA, so I think it will reach the 700 mark.

Star Wars Episode VIII has made $220 million dollars in its opening weekend, giving it the second-highest grossing opening weekend ever.

In three days, it outgrossed the entirety of Justice League's run so far, and it is already the 146th highest-grossing film of all-time.

Tomorrow, we should get a look at worldwide numbers and have a better handle on how the film is faring globally.

I really don't think the bad word of mouth thing is extending very far past the internet. Most of the words I've audibly heard coming out of people's mouths were "sick" and "awesome".

I feel like anecdotal evidence is useless. It has an "A" Cinemascore, and that is what is most important in determining the legs of a movie going forward.

I find the notion that thursday openings are "before the film actually opens" and friday numbers are touted as what happened after "1 day" as... some serious mental gymnastics that the film industry has pulled and instilled in the media.

The Thursday previews are counted in the totals of a Friday for every major site. The previews are just good indicators of how a movie will do the next day.

I guess that's fair if you want to be really picky about first-day openings, but the only numbers that matter are cume totals after the first week is up and moving forward.

With worldwide numbers in today, it looks like Last Jedi sits at #216 all-time with $450.9 million. Interestingly, this puts it almost exactly $100,000 ahead of Coco's entire run so far on the worldwide market.
