Like the game, hard to get past the contest stuff. Makes me want to like it less. I know it's dumb but I won't lie, it soured my opinion.

At the same time I can't deny that I find it a unique, confidently-made, funny, occasionally affecting game. But I don't just associate Undertale with "my personal enjoyment of the title".

I liked it. I'm not a crazy tumblr/fanartist/goatfucker though. I just thought it was a genuinely good game with a good story, good gameplay, and fucking amazing music.

I like the end a lot and the beginning a little. thought the middle dragged. that woulda been a better 3-4 hour game than a 6-7 hour one. I'd give it a 6.5 or so.

The game is awful. Even for an indie game which pretty often means you suck hard anyway. Any game that punishes you for what yo aren't supposed to do is unholy dog shit.

My personal best game ever. Writing is subtle and brilliant. Characters are compelling and endearing. Humor is right up my alley. Music is god-tier. More than anything, it pushes the medium into uncharted territory, and it does all of this in a short timeframe. It's not perfect -- the actual bullet hell gameplay can get dull, but even then the game sometimes finds ways to turn it into something unique that I haven't seen before.

I can only think of one game that made me laugh until I cried, made me fear enough to want to cry again, and made me feel so deeply that I cried again and again. I lost a lot of water playing that game.

EDIT: Spoiler-tagged things because I always fear overhyping this game to people who have never played it.

One of my favorite games ever made. I'll admit, it came out way too soon for it to win any "Best Game Ever" contests, but hating it for that seems awfully petty.

Don't really get the salt for it winning a game contest. I certainly like it more than OoT but I don't whine that other people like OoT enough to get it to win such a contest.

Very solid game but was most certainly overhyped to an insane level. Nowhere near the best game ever.

It's mostly an above average game that has strengths in characters and building levels of empathy (granted for most... all... of the side characters it through complete manipulation. It's like each time they try to do something that should be done in like episode 4 of a tv show in episode 1). It also has a competent story? It's just I don't know, not as clever as I think people make it out to be. Game play is average at best and subpar normally. I found myself enjoying talking to the monsters and such, but didn't really care for the progression of the game.

that's because they're used to Nintendo winning everything and they don't know how to handle Nintendo not winning

they're not a jaded Square fan like me who realized I'll never see a contest winner I'm happy with ever again, especially not after GOTD was utterly ruined at the end

As for specifics...
It's a game who's story and characters ( and music) very easily smooth over the few faults it has... provided you like the story and characters in the first place. Otherwise, an ok game, if a touch flawed.

It's not really that it won, it's what that did to b8. And the effects are still being felt now (see: ltm's post). B8 is enough a part of my life that it can affect the way I judge certain things - now that sounds ridiculous but, for example, I probably like Phoenix Wright more than I would because it was a shared, communal, positive experience here as well as just being a good game. Things tend to be more enjoyable that way in life as a whole, right? There are a lot of people who are probably in the same boat - they like PW a bit more because there was a community discussing and enjoying it alongside them. Think of Undertale as sort of the reverse of that. That's how I see it anyway - I associate PW with a positive experience, and Undertale with a negative one. It's a unique situation because usually the game is crap, so it doesn't matter, but UT obviously isn't crap.
