It's clear at this point that Disney has a very different view of what Star Wars is than the big fans, and what's done is done; there's no going back now. But if we could...

They could have made a great episode 7 if they just used the Jurassic Park/Disaster movie formula, where everything is great at first and then we see the downfall.

It would be impossible (using the original actors) to go right to the end of Return of the Jedi, but what we could have done was see the Republic 30 years later. The first hour of the movie would be going around to a handful of important planets in the New Republic and showing their peace and prosperity. We could meet up with a few old faces and make everything look really cool. Think about the first hour of Jurassic World and how it seems like such an awesome place that you might wish is reality.

Then you start mixing in bad dudes, dissidents. People who don't like the Republic. Start showing more slummy areas and hidden in this paradise we see a rogue element start to form and put together their resistance. They amass their forces until finally they make their attack and decimate the capital city, practically killing everyone on the planet.

The Republic forces are devastated and retreat, trying to get their own armies together. This is the story for the last hour of the film, and ultimately they are not prepared enough for this attack and after a series of battles, the Republic is defeated, with the First Order now reigning supreme.

The movie ends with the few remaining forces getting together and forming a resistance and they know that their only shot is to find Luke Skywalker.

This is an outline of a movie that would go to the same places Disney has planned, but allows for the fans to actually get what they want out of the films and to see the original trilogy actually have purpose. It would have been so simple for them to do this, and the blame has to rest with J.J. Abrams for why they messed it up so badly.

All I can say is that if it were a singular movie on its own, yeah it would have been good. It has the necessary arc and entertainment to qualify as a good movie.

As the continuation of the biggest franchise in film history, it is a failure in every sense of the word.

I hate the flip flopping people do with star wars.

TFA was a wannabe rehash of ANH for 2 years and then Last Jedi comes out, takes some ricks and suddenly TFA was great and Jedi is trash. When JJ makes Episode IX a rehash of Return, it'll start all over again.
