Pisses me off when people assume it is selfish to not want kids.

If our population were such we needed to procreate to continue the species... then MAYBE I could see the argument. We are overpopulated as fuck though.

Having kids is a luxury, similar to owning a exotic car or a boat. Of course as with any luxury it comes with downsides, such as being expensive and time consuming. Definitely not worth it to me.

If a person doesn't want kids because they think they'd make a bad parent, then I agree.

If a person doesn't want kids because they want to play videogames or travel or focus on their own wants, then that by definition is selfish.

It's not a selfishness that is inherently wrong though.

We don't want kids because we're selfish. Don't want to give up our lifestyle.

Agree with this though I will say most bad parents don't even entertain the idea that they woukd be bad parents. Most the time its people who would make good parents having anxiety that they might make bad parents

I don't want children because I'm not in a financial situation to support another human being.

Were I in that position financially, I would adopt maybe. Too many kids need good homes.

The only people who should not want kids are terrible people because terrible people would be bad parents.

Why is that the default for everyone though? Ecosystems do have a carrying capacity and if anyone looked at the population of humanity over the past 100 years, I'd argue an unwavering demand on everyone to have kids is a bit short-sighted. After all it's just propagating your own genetics, which is probably the epitome of selfish.

I'm going to be a doctor, and with that comes immense time demands that necessarily means missed soccer games and dance recitals. My wife is going into a comparably demanding career as well, which means our children would be neglected and raised by a nanny.

That's not fair to the child, but apparently being a doctor and not bringing in a child into this world for being cognizant about my limitations makes me a terrible person by your logic. Or that I ought to bring a child into less than ideal circumstances.

I suggest you reflect more on this.

Not being lower class for one.

That's how I was born and raised, and all it's done is made me hate my existence, regard my parents as selfish assholes for ever having me, and ensured I will *never* have kids of my own because I refuse to put them though the same experience of growing up poor and left wanting for even the basics of survival.

As far as I'm concerned, children are a luxury for the rich and no one else.

A career amenable to 40 hours/week, mine of which won't. I'm being a bit facetious in the sense that there really is never an "ideal" time. But the next 10-15 years will likely be 60-80+ hours per week for me and I'm already almost 30. When do I have kids?
