The fact that taxes are the price of civilization is not the point here TC. We have been told for over 30 years now that taxes are bad, government is bad, and greed is good. What do you really expect most people to think?

Some people may have laughed at Margaret Thatcher at the time when she was saying that 'there is no alternative' but 30 years later that's become true enough. How many of us could even think of an alternative to the current system we have now and a way to get to it?

Lol no they can't

You think those people are going to pay for schools, defense, infrastructure, etc on their own?

I don't want to get rid of government. And I don't want to get rid of taxes completely either. I just think there's too much government and there's too many people that want to the government to handle everything.

Having money is great and yes you should save the money you have. With luck people will save money until 2025 when suddenly they are hit with a tax increase due to this bill. Of course by then maybe a democrat will be in office so the republicans can blame him for the increase.

I hope this tax bill succeeds. I hope that it results in pay increases for everyone, more jobs, and free puppies like Trump claims.

Taxes pay for garbage stuff.

Abortions
Tearing down perfectly good highways to spend months repaving them
Passing legislation against majority interests

From what I understand, taxes don't pay for government spending; the creation of money does. Taxes primarily suck money out of the economy to prevent inflation.

Can anyone more familiar with economics (e.g. Darkman) confirm?

...no

your understanding is entirely wrong

government spending is paid for by a combination of taxes and the sale of treasury bonds

i sincerely hope every one of you lot who is happy with these cuts are prepared (and happy) to support your parents in their twilight years because their SS and Medicare is going to get slashed. just be consistent in your beliefs and don't be upset when gutting these programs end up costing you money later in life.

My parents made good choices and are well invested. Dad has a pension and a 401K that will net him 100k per year after retirement without drawing on principal. People in his industry are often paid a premium above market rate in addition to the pension to come out of retirement.

that's awesome and i hope it works out for them and you.

just consider that one significant health care issue, like cancer, can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, or more. their entire retirement, and your inheritance, can vanish in a short time if something goes wrong. health care costs is the #1 factor leading to bankruptcies in this country and i only expect it to worsen if these social safety nets are stripped away.

i fully admit that i am speculating here and there's no actual evidence that this will happen. but either the GOP leaves a 1.5 trillion dollar hole in the deficit, or they cut these programs. either way, i fear the long term effect of these tax cuts.

If they repaved the worn and torn ones, I'd be ok with it. They don't. They repave the ones that are still perfectly good, which is what I said.

they will leave the hole, and use the hole as an argument against any future programs until dems remove the tax cuts.

If your parents lived life as if they were never going to get old, that's their choice.

I only have one of the four on SS.

He wouldn't accept an inheritance anyway. I mean, it isn't like HE worked for any of that income. That is just an evil redistribution of wealth. And not like he needs the money anyway. If he is poor, well then, that is due to his own poor life choices and he should have bootstrapped himself up instead of hoping for handouts.
