Long story short. I hired an experienced animator from Craigslist to make an animation music video. He asks for half of the payment and the other when completed. I was like cool. The drawings were coming out cool. We agreed upon a completion day (a month).

Weeks pass by , and hes acting strange.
He said he needs more time. He will tell me to check my email but nothing will be there. He sends me a gif and Im like aight this is cool. Three months pass by and Im getting upset. I think he was scamming me. So I asked for a deadline and he passes it.

I confronted him and he was like its finished, Imma send you the video. But it never got sent. He sends me a gif instead. The gif had a lot of stuff wrong with it. So I was like fuck it. I want my refund. He was like nah man, I did a 1000 drawings for it already, its completed. I said send me it and he was like I will. I waited 72 hrs and I was like fuck it. I reached out to PayPal and opened up a case.

His wife emails me , saying Im selfish. Im the reason Why she cant pay their light and water bill. Im evil because I did this before Christmas. That he stood up all night working for me. Im trying to scam them, she contacted PayPal saying i want free work. And that she will get legal advice against me. So yeah lol its lit.

This her exact email

This is Johns wife owner of Paypal acct to which you retracted the payment for services John ALREADY DID FOR YOU! Because of you my water and light bill did not go thru!!

That make you feel good screwing someone over for their hard work then costing us our bills days before Xmas?!?!? My money in MY acct went to you rather than my scheduled bills!

You are obviously trying to get work for free and are disgustingly selfish person.

I have notified Paypal that you are obviously trying to pull a fast one and get work done for free basically a scam artist is what you are. He busted his butt staying up night getting that project done for you I am seeking legal advice moving foreword on you stealing money for work completed.

This is him :

The deal was half up front half upon completion. As depicted on email and agreement, I put in hours and days that lead to months on this project you have had plenty of time to give me a phone call and state any changes you needed done. I've sketched over 1000 pages for you with this project. The only feedback you have been giving me was positive, you never mentioned a deadline for this as well, had you had any issues that should of been mentioned by you when they first occured. You will not find another artist doing what I was doing for you I was basically working for free which cost me other projects to be able to complete yours.
I never issue refunds, I simply work with my clients until they are happy if that means some changes that is fine, so long as they are reasonable.

I will not be refunding for several reasons it has been over 30 days and my work was completed. I have done my part as best as I could with what you sent me. I do not work for free.

If you have it in an email of the completion date (a month you said in the OP), then it's already over. He specifically says 'months' here which he's been working on this thing.

If someone builds you a porch then you don't get it for free just because you didn't like the style of the rails. TC, you owe that guy money.

I texted him multiple times during a week of each month asking about it. I did it for three months. I have proof. And thats the thing , I never even got the completed project. So he hasnt build that porch for me. If I dont see it, it doesnt exist.

2000 drawings?

What kind of fps did he say he the video would be?

At 3 minutes over 2000 drawings sounds right for 12 fps

If it was supposed to be 30 fps he'd need at least 5000 drawings

Can we see the final project or at least gif he gave you

Hard to really pick a side here without really knowing what's going on. Sounds like the problem from the start was a clear lack of expectations set from either end.

Sending a gif instead of a video is a pretty common way to deliver a product but still withhold the final copy to ensure you get paid in the end, so that part is not exactly fishy.

When you say "a lot of stuff wrong with it", was this stuff that was very clearly lined out in a brief to begin with, or just stuff that you assumed he should know?

Was a deadline set? Or did you just get fed up with a lack of communication and set one down the line?

Finally, $200 for a project of this size is ridiculously cheap. That's not a defense of him either; seems like it was always going to turn out this way. When creatives lowball you that much you can be assured that you won't get a quality product on time.

He said he would send me a link to view the video and then I can pay him for me to download it. But he never sent it

I sent him a detailed synopsis on what I want in the video. He missed a lot of key elements. For example. I wanted a older version of the car but he created a new one. AFTER SPECFICIALLY REQUESTING a year of car and sending him a pictures of it

Heres proof of the deadline. https://ibb.co/j3k4C6

And it was 400 in total. He said he charges 500 a minute but gave me 400 total. I wanted a 2 minute video.

Sounds like a bummer all round.

If you're planning on doing something like this again TC, lay out a detailed brief. One document with literally every piece of info the creative needs, including required delivery date. Include the most basic shit, make it crystal clear. Storyboard it if you have to. Refer to every element specifically. Give examples of other works for inspiration. And then organise a meeting to go over everything and iron out any questions or suggestions.

Then follow up with an email, confirming all the key information and refer to the brief for the rest.

You didn't do anything wrong, but I'm telling you this as someone who works with creatives constantly - the need to get everything down like that is critical. All those conversations you have and all the times you talked about it don't matter - if it's not in the brief it doesn't exist. Having an exchange of emails is fine if things go wrong and you need someone to blame, but it's rarely good for actually getting what you want delivered.

Anyway I doubt he will sue you over this, but obviously keep all correspondence as a record.

Yeah Im working with freelancers right now. I want to make sure everything is detailed now. I wrote my synopsis even more detailed now and I will create a storyboard. From a creative to a creative, If its not perfect on how I want it then its not going to work. I cant settle for anything and thats what the guy wanted.
