Either FF3 DS or Star Ocean 2 for me.

Honorable mention to Tales of Phantasia, but that ended after Morlia Mineshaft. It feels like they screwed up and overleveled all the monsters in Morlia by like 15 levels. Never had to grind again after that.

Funnily enough, they are actually nerfing experience gains in the next patch, but it's balanced because they're changing leveling zones so they scale to your level. So instead of doing a dozen quests in one zone that level you beyond that zone, forcing you to move to the next one, you can stay in one zone and get full experience for everything you do.

lol definitely maplestory.

i actually started playing that p soon after the beta ended, early to mid 2000s iirc.

only ever got a character to like 52 because it was such a painful grind and i basically used it as an elaborate chat app. still kinda look at those days in a weird, nostalgic way though.

MMOs aside though i think DQ8 is one of the few games I immediately think of when 'grinding' comes to mind.

there was a few boss fights there which basically required you to periodically dedicate yourself to grinding. iirc there was one dhoulmagus fight where it was particularly pronounced

Runescape or Maplestory

Yeah, these easily. Runescape probably moreso. If I had to guess I probably clocked around 4-5k hours in Maplestory by the time I had my first level 200 character (when the level cap was 200), and I'm sure I must have put at least 500+ hours when I came back to the game later on getting it to 214 (level cap 250 now). Runescape though I have something like 12k hours clocked and just under 1/3 the way to exp cap (though I don't play as efficiently as some people, it's definitely possible to cap with my hours).

Final Fantasy 2

Like any other FF, there are plenty of cheap strategies to help you win without grinding. You can level up a single instant-kill spell like Teleport or Mini and proceed to wipe out every random encounter you come across in a matter of seconds. Few enemies resist these spells.

Enemies with a lot of HP (e.g. the final boss) are very vulnerable to Blood Swords, of which you can obtain two. So even with your characters at their initial stats, you can curb stomp the final boss in two rounds tops.

Runescape. Has anyone ever maxed every skill?

Yeah people do it every day, in RS3 you get a notification when someone maxes a skill, gets at least 99 in every skill or gets 200 million XP in every skill (I don't know if anyone's done 200 mill in every skill yet though).

Also thanks for bringing it up I change my answer to Runescape.

Yeah, every zone will scale to its expansion's appropriate levels. So vanilla will be 1-10 (starting zones), 10-60 for the rest. Outland and Northrend will scale 58-80. Cataclysm and Pandaria will scale 80-90. Draenor and Broken Isles already scale.
