Luke was a legendary Jedi in his time, and a master of the light side of the force. Kylo himself had stopped a laser mid-air in FA. It's totally understandable how he thought that Luke had such a knowledge of the force that he could make himself impervious to all but a light saber.

Kylo Ren is kind of dumb and immature. He's 29 years old and still throwing literal temper tantrums. His whole Darth Vader 2.0 schtick is a personal obsession he arrived at shortly after joining Snoke, and Snoke thinks it's embarrassing. Kylo Ren may be a really strong force user, but he's also an insecure edgelord with bad impulse control who can't see beyond his own emotional haze.

Not only the light side either. Ren probably understood that Luke had some dark in him. He was probably scared shitless.

Understanding if he fought Luke there, he had take him down asap or else he'd die probably knocked the sense out of him

Which is a terrific improvement, especially from Darth Maul. That guy is one of the dumbest things to ever happen in Star Wars, next to General Grievous.

Please don't compare Vader and Maul like that. One is the among the greatest villains in film history, the other is a space ballerina that doesn't even have enough depth to be one-dimensional.

Spoilers for the next one btw, Rey is totally going to build a light saber staff and it's going to be more space ballerina shit.

Anyways, Ren is about the only character, Luke still, marginally, that I like in the series anymore.

Maybe he thought what I thought: Luke must have deflected the blasters with his lightsaber or dodged all the shots super-fast or some other Force-assisted method that was veiled by salt flying everywhere.

I mean Kylo seems to believe before he even orders it that they need to throw everything they have at him. I think it was part malice, sure, but another part fear.

I think they look at it in terms of power. If the apprentace can kill the master, then he deserves to replace him. But I'm the greatest ever so he'll just be my apprentace forever.

People complain about the Ewoks but really what dragged 6 down to me was Sidius being a complete idiot. He makes two of the strongest Force users ever fight to the death, and expects the winner to be his subordinate. Which kinda makes sense via movie logic if you just really want to suspend disbelief but what doesn't make sense os the way he repeatedly stops Luke from doing what he wants him to do to remind him th s t it's the wrong thing to do.

"I'm gonna kill you, Vader!"
"Yes! Do it! I am evil and this is what I want you to do!"
"Oh yeah."

Kylo being an emo douche is what makes him the most objectively nuanced and interesting villain in Star Wars movie history. Some people just want a 2D menacing video game bad guy and thats fine, but its substantially more interesting that hes actually scared and insecure (like most real life villains, tbh).

The thing was that Snoke was reading Kylo's mind, and seeing exactly what he wanted: Conviction. He expected Kylo to turn the lightsaber in his hand, so Kylo was "lying" by being honest.
As a theme, no one who trusted the Force was 100% correct but no one was completely wrong:
- Rey correctly saw that Kylo would turn and thought it meant he would redeem himself.
- Kylo correctly saw that he would fight side by side with Rey, and thought it meant she would turn.
- Snoke correctly saw Kylo's conviction and turning of the lightsaber, and thought it was Rey who was gonna die.
