Perhaps he indeed felt the saber turn and wanted to be struck down for some reason? Either to become a part of the Force or he does have the power of reincarnation and this was a way to have Kylo fall deeper into Darkness.

I will hold out out hope for the plagueis theory until episode 9 debunks it. Otherwise I'll hope they do an episode 6.5 that shows his rise. And when that also happens I'll have stopped caring probably
