http://www.showbiz411.com/2017/12/23/box-office-last-jedi-now-running-over-100-mil-behind-force-awakens

School is out, but it didnt help The Last Jedi. The new Star Wars movie is running over $120 million behind the last one on a day to day comparison.

On its second Friday in release, The Force Awakens logged $49 million for a domestic total of $440 million.

Last night, The Last Jedi came in at $24.7 million. The domestic total is $321 million.

Well, one week and $321 million is nothing to sneeze at. Thats a damn good showing, second best to The Force Awakens. But its still quite a distance behind the first part of this trilogy.

First star wars in a decade cannot be overstated when looking at TFA's box office numbers.

Yeah, this movie was never gonna do TFA numbers. And unless there's another 10 year gap between films, there's never gonna be a Star Wars film that does TFA numbers.

I chalk it up to TLJ simply being a bad movie.

No one should have expected TLJ to do as well as TFA. TFA was the first Star Wars since the prequels and Disney's first Star Wars film, it was a huge event and even quite a few non-fans went to see it.

TLJ wasn't nearly as much of a novelty, so casual fans and non-fans of the series are more likely to wait to see it on Streaming or something down the line, especially with Disney's streaming service coming up in the next couple years.

Not sure why more people would see the second movie in a trilogy than the first.

I'm looking at Wikipedia now and as it turns out, the 2nd entry in each trilogy makes less money than the first.

Its the 3rd SW movie in two years. This is honestly a realistic outcome.

The movie is still gonna be the highest grossing film of the year. What more could anyone expect?

Right, except the main point here is that it's the worst year in movies overall in the past 22 years.

We live in an era of this thing called social media. If a film sucks, people know about it within 24 hours.

TLJ wasn't that good, so it's not getting those repeat viewer dollars or extra views from word of mouth promotion.

Not to mention TFA was pretty divisive to begin with, I'm sure plenty of people hyped for new Star Wars were disappointed enough to avoid the sequel in theaters.

Yeah. Cause most of the movies are garbage and the cost of going to the movies without MoviePass is ridiculous for such garbage.

TLJ is a far better movie than TFA. Much of it was digging out from the garbage Abrams set up.

I gotta say, I went to the movies a lot more often between ages 16 and 24... The most I've probably gone within a calendar year is about 15 times with an average of probably about 10... Now I go once a year, tops.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. TFA was a piece of shit movie, but people gave it a pass since it was the first Disney one, and they held out hope that the 2nd one would answer all their questions and move the story along.

Now that TLJ came out, everyone realized that none of our prayers would be answered. These are now just generic action movies that are meant to sell toys. So TLJ is feeling that backlash even though it is a lot more enjoyable than TFA. Although it does have a major pacing problem and could easily be an hour shorter.
