I celebrate Christmas because it's part of the culture. Fuck any religious reasons. It's just a renamed pagan sun god solstice festival anyway.

Keep telling yourself it's not Yule renamed.

There's no way Biblical Jesus was born in winter. This time was chosen because it's just replacing the existing pagan festival.

He's not talking about mass, but rather the traditions around it - like presents under a decorated tree, there's no biblical reason for that... The origins are all pagan. It's a tribute to brutal king named Nimrod, or so I've heard.

Not that you're not wrong, but I'm sure the billions of individuals that go to religious services, sing religious songs, and reference their faith feel differently.

So what if it's factually incorrect? Why does anyone need to act up and voice their "concern" over people's thoughts and actions on two days of the year if it doesn't impact their life?

Only a sith deals in absolutes. As for me I celebrate Christmas because it's fun and I like getting and giving presents. There's also the food my gosh the food. Like this Christmas my mom made these awesome little burger sliders. And my brothers wife made a big batch of various types of cookies. I've been pigging out since noon. I don't need any religious reasons to want to celebrate all that thank you very much.

So you have no reason why you should celebrate our holiday instead. You go and build a beer can totem pole of misery, and leave the rest of us alone.

From a non-religious standpoint there is some sense to it I'd say. Most folks have a three or four-day weekend thus making it easier to have family get-togethers. You can bet none of my family and relatives get together on Memorial Day, July 4th, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. to celebrate the meaning behind those days. To us the extended weekend just allow us to have a potluck and reunion of sort.

To be honest, I have a chance to not celebrate Christmas at all next year, and I'm looking forward to it. I do it because my family does it, and even then they're not Christian, for the most part. It's far more of a pain in the ass than it's worth to me.

There are two holidays on December 25th, both called "Christmas." One is the Christian celebration of Christ's birth, the other is a secular occasion marked by gift-giving and spending time with loved ones. Both draw on traditions that are a blend of Pagan and Christian ideas.

That's like saying donut is dumb because it's pointless not to spell it doughnut. People like using shorter words over longer ones. That's the point of spelling it Xmas. You don't seem to get that.

Yes, which is exactly where Xmas originated.

"Xmas is a common abbreviation of the word Christmas. It is sometimes pronounced /ksms/, but Xmas, and variants such as Xtemass, originated as handwriting abbreviations for the typical pronunciation /krsms/. The "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word , which in English is "Christ". The "-mas" part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for Mass."

You make it sound like people use Xmas to avoid saying Christ.

And how can there be feminists if they were aborted before birth.

Atheists celebrating xmas is cultural appropriation. By doing, it becomes non religious. Thus Christians will have been celebrating an atheist festivity after atheists have taken it over.

This.

No one is absolutely absolute in anything they do. People pick and choose, compromise, choose the lesser evil and so on. That does not make them hypocrites.

People are just people.

The ability to choose is everyone's FREEDOM. Having people shackled into a form of rigid, unbending and uncompromising position and lifestyle BECAUSE they are atheists simply mean that they are bound and gagged by the beliefs they cherish in the name of political correctness or the fear of being called a hypocrite is the exact opposite of being free.

If we were absolutely absolute in everything; in every thought or deed, then we'd have no real sense of freedom.

Atheists choosing to celebrate holidays doesn't HAVE to mean anything. It's just people having some good and clean fun with family and friends.

We live in a day and age where Christmas is practically force-fed down our throats. The moment Thanksgiving hits, we're bombarded with Christmas deals and music and lights and movies and everything. In addition, many nations claim Christmas as a national holiday, so a majority of employees (and all students) are required to take the day off whether or not they're Christian. If you want to see Christmas celebrated by less non-Christians, then it might make more sense to not make it a mandatory day off for everyone. Instead, everyone should be granted a handful of days to take off as a holiday of their choosing or something (that would make it more fair for those of other faiths that need to request paid time off for their religious holidays anyway).

And, as already noted, many of today's traditions for Christmas have nothing to do with Christmas, but were rather taken from Pagan and other Anglo-Saxon rituals to help convert them to Christianity. Even the date has nothing to do with Jesus's birthday.

FYI, I went and celebrated Christmas with my friend's family, and his mother is very religious. If you respect others and share the holiday with people outside your faith, it goes a long way towards being the caring individual Jesus told you to be.
