So my younger brother just crashed his car last week (he's fine). Completely totaled, would cost more than the car itself to fix, so my parents just sold it for scrap.

I drive a 2007 Honda Fit. My older brother has a 2011 Hyundai Accent.

My older brother first got the 2007 Fit "brand" new (it had like 2-3k miles on it). He then got the Hyundai when he moved, so the Fit was passed down to me.

With the loss of my younger brother's car, he naturally needs a replacement. So my parents thought process was, hey, Muffinz0rz has never actually gotten a chance to get a new car (unlike older brother), as all he's had are hand-me-downs, and he's been a model child (worst offenses are speeding tickets, gainfully employed, no longer a dependent on parents since graduation, renowned GameFAQs shitposter), so let's take the Fit for the younger brother and get him something new! (because I've treated the Fit with dignity and it's still running smooth as silk even at 95k miles).

The few suggestions they threw up were a brand new 2017 Fit, 2017 Hyndai Elantra, or potentially a new Civic or Accord (basically starting with brands we know work, given the success with the 2007 Fit and the 2011 Hyundai).

Thoughts? I'm thinking brand new Fit. I mean, why fix what ain't broke?

He gets it.

Funny thing is, he is actually getting an upgrade. The car he crashed was a 2004 Acura-something (TSX?) we bought from our cousins.

That sounds smart - go buy a brand new car then turn right around and void the warranty with pointless modding.

If you want a fast car, then buy one.

Nice, tc. I'm glad to see the middle kid get something nice. It was also a good move for your parents to not "reward" your younger brother with a new car.

With that said, my parents bought me a brand new Honda Civic in my senior year and it was a great deal for me.

Get a Subaru.

I agree that modding civics is ridiculous, past a certain point. Wheels, tint, etc is cool, but exhaust and spoilers are just stupid.

"My 134 hp engine needs this F150-sized exhaust to breathe!"

"I need the spoiler to create down force on the back end of my car when I race around corners, even though I have FWD and it's basically just adding unnecessary weight and making me look adolescent."

Honestly, I care so little about cars and love my current Fit that it really wouldn't have bothered me if they got him something new. Fortunately though my parents are not dumb enough to reward idiocy (even though he is technically getting an upgrade, but that's just because it's more convenient than taking the plunge on a risky used car).

Not often you hear someone complimenting a Fit or Hyundai lol, but most things just work in this era of vehicles.

IMO, Civic = Camry > Accord> Corolla > whatever else in those categories. They'll hold the resell value the best as well

Could branch out and look into a Jeep Renegade or some other smaller SUV, like a RAV4 or CR-V

Right? They're just preliminary options though because we know Honda works and Hyundai works, just based on the success of the Fit and Accent, respectively.

Branching out into Toyota isn't a bad idea, if the Camry really is good, but my top preference would be the "safe" pick of Honda or Hyundai.

Got back from the test drive not too long ago. Drove a Civic and Fit.

Call it bias from nearly 10 years of driving a Fit, but it just feels so much smaller and more familiar than the civic. Bright side too is, pricewise, a stripped down Civic is comparable to a Fit "EX" (which is a nicer model with better technology). So by sticking with the Fit, I get some fun toys to go with it.

Nice TC. Id go with the Civic personally but I dunno much about cars.

The only car my parents ever got me was some piece of crap they got for $700 at a car auction. It was a deathtrap with dozens of issues and often broke down. They bought my older brother a new Mustang convertible, even though he was on drugs and failing school.

Nice to see some parents being fair.

I know but he could try something new, and a little nicer, I did not have much interest in cars until I saw a fast and furious movie and played a GTA.

Was originally set on getting a Toyota Corolla for the fuel economy and safety but it was boring as hell to drive and my second choice was a Mitsubishi Lancer. When I drove the Lancer it responded much better, was fun to drive, and handled great which impressed me.

Topic creator might be somewhat of a car guy and not know it cause he has never tried a fun car, had I just gone with the safe choice I highly doubt I would be into cars like I am now.

Congrats, man. You're lucky, but there's no need to be ashamed of it.

My mother is trying to help me get a new(er) Civic. I've been driving an '02 Civic since high school. It's served me well, but it's essentially a screaming metal deathtrap that rattles like crazy at 55 mph at this point. I'm not wanting to get a brand new one (because I neither want a brand new car nor can I afford the payments on said brand new car), but it's difficult to find one that's more than two but less than fifteen years old.

I think the Fits are cute in a way. A friend of mine had one for like five years until she hit a deer... then she got a newer Fit lol. I'm partial to Civics myself.

I saw someone up above suggest Subaru. A buddy of mine has a new-ish Legacy. He hasn't had any problems with it before, but I did a ton of research on them and they seem to be pretty expensive to repair when they do inevitably need it.

Oh she doesn't like them at all. She hates cars. Period. She has a Pontiac Grand AM, but didn't even know what a "Pontiac" was until she had to buy insurance for the first time.

She's the awkward middle child of a rich family and her older sister and her dad embarrass the hell out of her by buying top of the line Mustang's and Buick's.

Said older sister is beyond materialistic. Her last boyfriend was a Montreal tech startup guy and he daily drove an R8. The rant we all had to hear about that orange beast was fucking grating as hell.

Seems like the older sister is a gold digger, an obvious one at that, her boyfriends probably pump and dump as they likely get tired of her after a while once they see how materialistic and not worth keeping long term she is.

Women like the older sister are fun for short term dating but they are not marriage material.

Defs a gold digger though lol, she herself had no interest in anything more than a Jeep before she started dating big city rich bois.

Back at our respective places, doing some shopping around. Last day of the year, I'd imagine some of the sales guys would be keen on huge discounts for new cars.

Dad's best offer so far is $18k (after tax and any additional fees) for a brand new 2018 Fit EX. I went to two different dealers and couldn't get below $19k because the markup for the Fit is like, a $400 difference, whereas it's in the thousands for other cars.

I'm so stoked
