I found that X just didn't have a story or anything to grasp onto. Sure there is this giant world and you can explore it, but it's just filled with so much stuff I didn't care about. I put about 20 hours into it and then sold it... cause I didn't care.

I've heard that most people felt like X was not a worthy successor to the original, and that 2 feels more like the original.

Knowing all this, what is the likelihood that I would enjoy 2?

X shares little with the first one beyond the combat system and the large world to explore.

2 keeps those, while expanding on the former. But it also has a more story focus than X while sharing certain traits with 1.

If you didn't like the combat system or a large world to explore, then the Xenoblade series isn't for you. If you just didn't like that XCX was so sparse and disjointed with its story, then that isnt something XC1 and XC2 share. X would give you tiny bits of the main story in the short missions throughout with characters that barely contribute to it, while fleshing those characters out just a little in sidequests you had to do until you did enough missions to unlock the next story mission. 1 and 2 are more traditional with their jrpg story telling.

XCX also has a more deliberate sci-fi style, while 1 and 2 blend a bit of sci-fi and fantasy.
