I can't really see this, personally. TFA has been loved more than any of the prequel movies since it came out, and while TLJ was incredibly divisive at first it seems, to me at least, that people are starting to warm up to it.

Yikes, that's pretty grotesque

The posts saying "Clones is better because lightsabers" is really surprising too. Like, if you're on the Star Wars board on GameFAQs...I mean it doesn't necessarily make you a super-hardcore fan, but you're probably a notch above casual? And yet you still boil down the quality of these moves to whether or not it had cool lightsaber stuff

I mean Yoda in Clones is one of the coolest moments I've watched in the cinema, but it can't save the movie on the whole. I mean, obviously.

I remember RLM pointing out how the only people who like the PT are babies easily entertained by a bunch of dumb lightsabers and they're proving it right. When given the choice of "good movie with flaws but very little lightsabers" vs. "bad movie with a few good moments and a bunch of lightsabers" and it's nearly a 50/50 split, you know the fanbase is lost.

Also funny story

This week at school has only been a two-day week because the term/semester is only just starting so I only had like 12/13 of my class in. So I couldn't really teach the full curriculum. Did a few little lessons to get them ready but nothing major. I'd anticipated this happening anyway

Anyway it gets to Thursday afternoon (weekends are Fri/Sat here) and there's half an hour left so I just put lightsaber battles on YouTube. These kids have never seen star wars except for one Lebanese/Russian kid so they don't know anything about it. So I ask them to pick the winner before each one (blue sword or red sword?) and we watch a few. They get really into them and get so loud with their cheering I actually had to pause the video and shush them because there's a class next door. It was funny listening to them rooting for Darth Maul

Anyway so the last one we watch is Ren vs. Rey from TFA and the second they realised that this time it was a girl fighting, the girls in the clsss went absolutely nuts. They were so excited and hyped about it. Literally just the fact that she was a female. Some of them are really quiet, polite kids, but I've never heard them so loud as both when they saw Rey and when she won.

I mean if anyone doubted the influence Rey has and why (I think) she's ultimately a really good thing, I feel like that would make you a believer. It was pretty cool honestly.

Hey I love lightsabers as much as the next guy, but even I hate how much it was overused in the prequels. Like, in almost every scene, even when it wasn't necessary, they had to flash out their lightsaber. It could not be more blatant that it's just waving a shiny object around to keep the kids interested.

Astoundingly it works on adults too, people are ridiculous

Someone did a video of "every time a lightsaber extends and retracts in the movies."

It's like 7 minutes long. 6:30 is from the prequels.

I'd go as far as to say it makes something worthwhile out of the prequels. The moves Vader busts out on those rebel troopers are basically the same as Anakin styling on the battle droids in 2 and 3, but the scene is presented from the cannon fodder perspective and makes it something completely different. And without that context the impact is less, and it also does more to emphasize that Anakin and Vader are the same guy than anything in the main episodes.

Sorry just got to reading this but that is really cool, my little sister loves Rey and it's nice seeing how much they all look up to her

Which is the main reason I'm glad she didn't turn to the dark side, like yeah it would have been a cool twist for us adults (less so for the baby adults), but my sister would have been utterly crushed. And those other girls too, their dreams about a series they've never seen, crushed

Would be a sad day

What I really like about Ridley and the way she plays Rey is there's a kind of earnestness to her that I find very endearing and likeable

That big grin when she "bypassed the compressor" or whatever it was in TFA for example. Just a very likeable actress/character even if she is maybe a bit too competent at everything.

Yeah, many fans have issues with the direction of these new movies, but I've rarely heard people criticize the performances of the young actors. Daisy Ridley plays her part damn well. If anything, I'd say the least quality performances came from Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. Sacrilege or not, it felt like Ford kinda phoned it in, and I feel bad saying this, but it just felt uncomfortable watching Fisher with her voice and energy completely depleted. Everything she did seemed so... labored.

I mean of all the criticisms of TLJ I and other people have, I don't think any of the new characters are on them (or at least, not very high). Rey has some writing problems, but she's well acted and pretty likable. Finn might have had a terrible B-plot, but his actual character was still great. Poe was good through the whole thing, and even Rose who was somewhat of a weird addition in general ended up being better than I thought she'd be when she was first introduced.

Bad characters was Rogue Ones shtick, not the sequel series so far.

Also while I think TLJ is a bad movie to say its worse than AotC is kind of insane.

I thought it was pretty good. I liked Luke and I actually liked Kylo Ren much more than in the TFA. I absolutely hated Leia, again. If somebody had to stay behind why couldn't it be Leia? I also hated that Guardians of the Galaxy survive in space thing she did, the way it happened just looked ridiculous. I agree a lot of the "comedy" was poor even for Star Wars. I struggled to understand a lot of what Serkis was saying and I might be the only one that didn't like Rose. I think by the end she was ok but for the majority of the film I hated her character.
My girlfriends main complaint was she hated the fact that Rey and Kylo just stared at each other all the time. Like if you put it all together there's maybe 5-10 minutes of them literally just staring at each other.
I loved the Porg's and I loved those Lanai on Ahch-To with Luke. I even liked Snoke and how he was so confident he was all powerful that he didn't even realise he was losing control of Kylo. I thought Poe was alright and one of the better characters.

I dunno I think he might have been one of the worst parts. I like him but sometimes his humour reminded me of like, John Cena at his worst. A bit too...obvious maybe.

Also I think I realised why I like the fight scene so much. The characters seemed to struggle. I watch a lot of superhero movies and that inevitably means a lot of people tearing through faceless mooks. And sometimes they do that well and stylishly but here you could actually see genuine strain on Rey and Ren's faces and they actually had to think about how to get out of certain predicaments, say if they were in a chokehold or what have you.

For our two principal characters and the main two force users, you might expect them to tear through their opponents easily, especially when they're not even named characters. The prequels did that quite a bit, mostly whenever Jedi were fighting droids. But here there was real struggle and difficulty and intensity, and it took itself more seriously.

Also really well choreographed and the most chill lightsaber kill ever

The Kylo/Ren teamup fight in the throne room is easily the best lightsaber fight in the series in terms of being an actual fight. It doesn't have the emotional gravitas of stuff like Luke/Vader but it's an extremely well-done scene. Aside from being tense and amazing visually, it feels like an actual fight where people are trying to kill each other instead of actors swinging at air (like every fight in the prequels are).
