They released maybe the best Mario and Zelda games ever made, maybe some of the best games ever made period, in the first year of the Switch's release.

The next Mario and Zelda game probably won't be released for another 4 or 5 years and if they do come out on the switch, they'll likely be sequels/use the exact same engine like Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Majora's Mask did back in the day.

So now we have like.... this 5 year drought where I'm not sure what games will come out now.

They have been so hush hush about Animal Crossing that I doubt it's far in development if it's even being developed at all

Next year will see Pokemon Gen 8 at the earliest, as well as the next Fire Emblem game. And there's still Smash 5 and Metroid Prime 4 to look out for.

Also, they've already started work on the next Zelda game.

We need an F-Zero game anyway, preferably with online features and a track creator. Some new IPs would be nice.

And more third-party support can never go amiss. Get Square back on side. Maybe another collaboration like SMRPG.

I'm about to beat Odyssey and I have 155 hours in BoTW

For me, these two games were by far the best games I have played in years. As someone who has generally been bored by most games these days, these games actually wowed me and surprised me. I don't even remember the last game that made me feel that way.

Even other "masterpieces" in the past 10 years, like say for instance The Last Of Us.
I really liked that game, I consider it a 10/10 game, but nothing about the actual gameplay impressed me at all. I was more impressed by the cinematic experience than I was with what I was actually playing. Like 99% of American games are just like... movies now and not much else to the game

And everything else that was a good game just felt like "oh hey it's this again"

But Odyssey and BoTW felt like game-changers to me.

I can confidently say BoTW is ten thousand times better than any WRPG that exists and will be better than anything Bethesda will ever make in their existence.

And Odyssey is leagues better than any platformer being made today.

You look at games like Yooka Laylee and compared to Odyssey, they play like complete dogshit.

Just my opinion.

I will admit that WRPGs often leave a lot to be desired in terms of core gameplay (which can be seen clearly in Bethesda's games). The funny thing is that BotW probably wouldn't be what it is without them though. Some of the things people are raving about in it were done with Morrowind, like not leading the player by the nose, letting the player head to the final boss at almost any time (without necessarily being prepared), being able to do things out of order, etc.

Many of BotW's "revolutionary" lessons are things that were done in games years ago. Nintendo just took them and applied them to Zelda, which I certainly don't think is a bad thing.

Milkman5 posted...

It's better in some regards (like graphics, story and combat), but it's a different type of open world game, with a clearly defined main character. It's not to everyone's taste.

Fire Emblem, Pokemon, Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, Yoshi and Kirby are all exclusive that are coming out. Project Octopath is also exclusive I think. Smash is also a possibility. Also according to hackers there is evidence that virtual console is coming out soon.

Which if any are coming out next year is tough to say. I think Kirby, Yoshi and Octopath have release plans for 2018. I'm not sure about the others. Although I would be surprised if they do get out in 2018.

Nintendo is hoping to sell a 150% the units next year compared to this one. So I'd hope they have a fair few exclusives coming out.

personally i did not enjoy BOTW at all (I think it is a dull game & the majority of its praise comes from the fact that it has Zelda written on the box) but even if you love it, to say it is ten thousands times better than any western rpg that has ever existed is an insane level of hyperbole lol

Pokmon, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Bayonetta, and Metroid are all on the way. They may not all release as soon as next year, but plenty of them will.

Now, Im not gonna act like any of those besides Pokmon are as big a deal as Mario and Zelda are (hey, maybe FE if youre Sakurai), as frankly, there arent a lot of franchises that massive at all, but I dont think Nintendo fans will be hurting for new content anytime soon. No tellin what else Nintendo has up their sleeve for next year.

All the important third parties are. Atlus is making SMT5 on it, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Persona 5 port, Square is interested in porting a bunch of FF games to it.

It'll become a wonderful JRPG machine, like the DS and 3DS before it

I don't think Ninty will have a problem now that their handheld/console divisions are combined. Most of the droughts for the Wii U were due to the 3DS getting so much support. Comes down to preferences but tons of franchises ready to be retooled going forward, including some that have been sitting on the backburner. 3rd Parties have already started to come around and will likely continue to do so - if there's legit money to be made, they will have no qualms.

For me it was. My previous favorite WRPG was maybe New Vegas or KoToR, but I much prefer BoTW over them.

BoTW is a like if a ghibli movie was an WRPG and it actually has good gameplay despite being such a massive game

My only concern is that these games are going to play it overly safe.
Fire Emblem will be just like Fates, Kirby will be just like Robobot/Return To Dreamland/Triple Deluxe,
Yoshi will be more of the epic yarn formula. A by the books platformer with an arts and craft art-style

I'm sure the games will be great and I'm going to pre-order Kirby and Fire Emblem, I just don't think they will be wowing in any way

And even if the brand name did help sell copies initially there'd be a whole lot more people bitching about it, and legitimately (like with No Mans Sky) if that were the case. But instead overwhelmingly good reviews and GOTY status is what it's received.

Odyssey was ANNOUNCED in January and made it to shelves by October and blew everyone away.

There will be a New SMB at some point next year. A Kirby game is in the works, probably some sort of sequel to Yoshi's Woolly World is coming, Bayonetta 1-2 and 3 at some point. I assume F-Zero and maybe some Mario sports games are coming. A return to form for Mario Party as well.

That and the fact Nintendo is really going all in with Indie titles makes me think they will be fine.

I'm not trying to convince to like it. Just pointing out in the case of games like NMS, there was legitimate complaints about a game that promised to be what it wasn't. A tactic some companies do practice when trying to sell an inferior product based on the title or the IP in it. That doesn't seem to be the case with BotW with majority of people.

Meh, BotW is a zelda game but it's drastically different from all the others and we also got ARMS and mario+rabbids this years which were pretty neat games with new ideas.

Nintendo plays the sequel game just as much as everyone else, sometimes less, they just get more shit for it because they've been doing it longer.

We still don't know what Retro Studios are working on.

They also have partners like Next Level Games who I'm sure will come out with stuff. The secondary Mario and Zelda teams haven't released anything yet too.

I think we'll get some sort of Mario Kart sequel (perhaps Nintendo Kart since there's already MK8)

They'll be fine. Nobody expected Splatoon for the Wii U and that was in its second or third year. Hell I'd be happy to see an ARMS sequel that expands on a lot of stuff.

http://ign.com/articles/2017/06/13/e3-2017-metroid-prime-4-is-not-developed-by-retro-still-has-longtime-series-producer

Nintendo has revealed that the recently-announced Metroid Prime 4 is not developed by Retro Studios, the developer who made the first three games.

Instead, Nintendos Bill Trinen revealed at a group interview that the game is being built by a talented new development team. Despite the shift, the game will still be overseen by longtime producer Kensuke Tanabe, who produced the previous Metroid Prime games.
