nothing i said detracts from my opinion that balthier makes the game good, just that he has no reason to be in the cast like vaan or penelo.

I thought ff12 was alright. I played it when it first came out, so about 11 years ago.

It was fun, but something didn't click well with me. Maybe it was the story, idk. I think I got kinda far, but idk. The last thing I remember doing was ...

going to Frans village and fighting this green, tree dragon looking thing that took me awhile to beat. I think I did more after that though. Like, go on some type of air fortress? I think I did something with Cid. I don't remember.

Balthier and Fran are the only good thing about XII, imo. I tried recently to play the game a second time since the HD re-release on PS4; goods gods I hated it so much, even after the ability to speed things up made the battle system much more tolerable (but still shit).

Those same demographics, unfortunately, are why there exists two versions of the first NieR game, with the younger Nier (brother) in Japan and older one (father) in the US.

That said, I wish we had a better young character than nasally-voiced, useless git that was Vaan.

pretty much that, but I think they didn't care as much about the characters in this entry as the story was more focused on the political story rather than character story. though i'd say Ashe would have made an acceptable MC as well. personally though I don't view Vaan as the party leader though he's MC, I just like to think the story is told from his perspective. like a narrator in a book who is present for the events the book talks about but wasn't the main focus of the story.

I agree with this. The game is not really about Vaan at all, as Basch and Ashe were more central to the plot. It kind of treats all characters more or less equally, and you don't even have to put Vaan in the party. He's only the "main" character (mostly in the beginning) because Square Enix thought he would be relatable and sell more copies in Japan.

All I can say is play a bit more, first discover everyone's raison d'tre for opposing the Empire and then judge those motivations.

Early game Balthier has no reason to be there (which is why they hold onto the whole "you owe me that magic rock" bit for so damn long), but later in the game he does have a very strong reason to stick around. But early on Balthier doesn't really have much reason to believe Ashe and Basch will really get much done and doesn't really need to stick around. Plot wise it would make more sense for him to disappear for a while and then reappear when the resistance grows stronger... But that would mean less Balthier and no one wants that.

Every now and then I think about replaying 12. Maybe Ill buy the new version.

its not bad. I slightly prefer the original but I like being able to do whatever I please with my characters versus being forced into classes like in the latest version. other things make up for it though like it auto saving upon entering new zones so if you die you don't have to replay too much.

in hingsight being forced into classes wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I had a OP team in the original for the simple fact I had everyone knowing all the healing spells.

Vaan and Penelo have no place in the game they legitimately lower the quality of the game by being in it.

It's clear Basche was intended to be the MC but they added Vaan late in development. They didn't fix character interaction which made the main cast lack in development, which was made very apparent by how much better the villains were.

The combat system sucked. Summoner was a PS2 launch title with a fraction of the development time which handled it much better.

The lack of skills and the leveling system sucked.

The zones were pointlessly large and long.

Never finished the game, gave it a fair shit 3 times over the years. This wasn't merely a disappointing final fantasy as many try to claim. It's a bad game regardless of series.

funny how opinions work. its among my favorite. top 3 easily. and i've played all the numbered ones minus MMOs and XV

also penelo did have a point in the game she just outlived her usefulness to the story early on. if it wasn't for her balthier and fran would have had no reason to stick around as long as they did. i'll agree along the lines of maybe she should have been a guest party member and over all replaced outright by someone else like maybe a bangaa or seeq just to have more of the races as playable characters.

Remove Balthier (and Fran by extension) from the group, and not only does it become even less appealing (and more appalling) but then you're left with a self-centered princess who just wants her throne back, a man who was framed by his twin brother and then pratically swept under the rug by the devs to make room for a younger main character, a girl with stupid-as-fuck shoulder blade leather wings and the worst damn eyebrows and not even kidnapped and rescued because Balthier wasn't there to give her that handkerchief, and Vaan, the king of shoehorned characters with no real personality or purpose of his own. Seriously, Vaan and Penelo were such a damn waste.
