I've got 4 more episodes to go for Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works, so expect final thoughts soon! I'm still making my way through Netflix's The Crown which is rather fantastic thus far overall. I'm watching Dragon Ball for the first time, too! And I'm rewatching The Expanse, Game of Thrones and Monster. (Well, I never did finish Monster, but still.) I'm even checking out ERASED! And we can't forget Star Trek: Discovery returning with new episodes very shortly, now can we?

Outside of television, I'm reading The Wheel of Time, The Witcher, and Star Wars: Leia.

Leon is in the last third of the original Fate/stay night anime. He'll be playing the first year's batch of FF15 DLCs soon too! And I think he's still at it with Super Mario Odyssey!

I saw it up through ~49 or so (out of 74) three or four years ago with a few friends. We'd watch a batch of episodes every week alongside whatever else we were watching at the time. We enjoyed it but I think there was something about the slowness of the pace or maybe we got sidetracked or something, I don't know. In any case, we never finished, and there's very little of it I remember now.

Not really the case in Nichijou. I think there are like 10 viewpoint characters and 7 or so are girls? They even got a guy to sing the whole OP! It's not really a cute girls doing cute things show or anything. More of a pure comedy. Though I'm not a huge fan, so I wouldn't really push for it.

On the final four high-octane climactic episodes of Fate/stay in the shore of the dreams bordering another Nights --Into Dreams--: Xenoblade Unlimited Perfect Works, we begin at Shiro's house with Rin and Saber getting some spotlight dialogue moments before ushering Shiro to bed. Nighty night, Shiro, the adults are talking... or something. But Shiro can't sleep (I mean who could with the fate of the world on their shoulders and two beautiful women staying the night?) so he asks Rin if she might just let him know the plan anyway and she acquiesces by ordering him to take off his clothes. He questions whether or not that means just his shirt, to which Rin scolds him and says of course it does, but since clothes is plural I don't buy it and I think we were spared a hentai scene courtesy of mistranslation. Cute.

Seagulls flock overhead, I just wanted to separate the spoiler tags each paragraph, and the trio heads out to face their destinies. Gilgamesh is chilling around to troll Shiro and Rin, so Shiro urges Rin to run a Muk on Board 8, so she does, but it's gross, but it's cool, she's got this. Girl, you've got this. Saber has to fight Not-Sasuke, because of course she does, because called it, consider it called, wow, it's like I have a fifth sense or something. Their fight actually gets really cool at the end with that genuinely terrifying double-slash technique Notsuke uses (and Saber trumps). Like, it takes a lot for a show to actually scare me, especially anime, and for the first time in years that kinda did. I knew Saber would win but uhh yeah that strike would have ended me for sure.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Setsuna F. Seiei, but Shiro starts the fight with Gilgamesh and it's the best dang fight in the franchise, bar none, game, set and match. Every minute of it is at least good, if not golden, and in the penultimate episode? When Shiro gets the upper hand? Holy wow, holy wow, holy wow. Then comes what might be my top moment of either series. "Go ahead and chop your arm off. But first, move an inch to the left." NIIIIIIIICE. Archer's still not my absolute fave or anything but holy wow. Gilgamesh's face when he gets destroyed.

That's what makes this Star Trek DS9 crossover so good, is the attention to detail when but honestly seeing Shinji get nursed back to health by Sakura just reminds me how wasted she is in this route, and yeah, I get it, these are all based on VN routes, but as a show I have to dock points here. As a story conveyed in a television series, it's shoddy at best to leave her hanging. Source material, canon, timelines, go watch Heaven's Feel, blah, blah, blah, I am going to rate this show based on what I've been given and I was given a raw deal with Sakura. I'm glad we at least see her again though -- and Ise, too, and little blips of other characters who were uncermoniously dropped midway through the story.

The final episode features a chicken curry Waver Velvet cameo, which is rad. I spent almost the entire series wondering if he'd show up but when I made my peace with the fact that Kurisugu mysteriously died offscreen between Fate/Zero and FSN I decided that it was less likely than I'd hoped. And yet there he was! Pretty neat. I've gotta say, I talked with Eddv a bit after finishing up and I was bummed to learn that the only real continuation is some fanservice overload thing, because I feel like it'd be really neat to see Shiro go through what Archer went through and hopefully overcome them. Or at the very least, we could learn the lore of what happens next in this world. It's an inviting world, rich with certain potential, but I guess there's a reason most of the sprawling universe is what-if content; beyond the Holy Grail War itself, there's really not much to be said. I always love my saga style though so that's too bad. But Shiro and Rin are gonna be together 'til the end of the line, which makes me even happier than the mystified "what?" I felt at the introduction of a rival figure for Rin at that school. I guess it was just for jokes but there were tidbits here that really felt like setup.

For Archer's backstory, it isn't actually revealed in any of the games, but in some side materials that were released later IIRC. The Shirou that becomes Archer didn't have anyone. Saber, Ilya, Sakura, and Rin all died during his Holy Grail War. A big part of the reason that Shirou isn't going to end up like Archer again is that he has Rin with him. Since he's not alone, he won't go down the wrong path.

Also there's a ton of Fate Universe stuff! Hollow Ataraxia is a direct sequel to F/SN. The original game is huge. It got Zero as a prequel. Grand Order doesn't really follow up on the F/SN story, but it's a neat plotline with lots of story in its own. And then there's Extra and Apocrypha as AUs.

(Not that I'd judge it without playing it myself but that's what I'm hearing, haha.) But like I said, I get that the Grail War is kind of necessary for most of the lore stuff they've built with FSN, so I understand why most of the spinoff material is in separate timelines, different route results, etc

I would guess Archer would have no way of knowing that was the solution. The surefire guaranteed way to make sure it doesn't happen is just to kill Shiro.

The real reason is that Archer wasn't actually trying to fix anything, he just wanted to commit an elaborate suicide. A Shirou that isn't him having a happy ending isn't what he wants.

Hollow Ataraxia is kinda fanservice, but the good type. Characters interacting with each other in unusual ways, having both serious and fun scenes. You get a ton of character development for people like Caster and Rider who weren't quite main characters in the original, and further development for the main cast as well. It also has a main plot, though that's probably only about 15% of the experience. I dunno what I'd compare it too, because there's not really much else out there that's like it. Trails the 3rd, maybe? I felt like this was rather more successful than that though.
