A chef who joked about spiking a vegans meal with animal products claims she has been sent death threats.

Laura Goodman, the co-owner and head chef at Carlini in Shifnal, Shropshire, wrote cruel posts in a Facebook group about spiking a meal she cooked for a pious, judgmental vegan with animal products.

She was widely criticised, condemned by the Food Standards Agency and the restaurant was flooded with one-star reviews by veggies and meat-eaters alike. Goodman wrote: Pious, judgmental vegan (who I spent all day cooking for) has gone to bed, still believing shes a vegan.

When people commented on the post to ask if she meant she had put animal products in the groups meal, she said: Actually I should have said theyre not a vegan not shes. Started with asking me to telephone them, over Christmas, to discuss the dietary requirements of their guests within a set time frame, and ended with me wondering why Im explaining this simplistic post to a pious ___.

On another post in the group, she wrote: Spiked a vegan a few hours ago. Her husband, Mike Gale, has rushed to her defence to say, despite the multiple posts, it was all a misunderstanding.

This have all got out of hand. There was absolutely no meat in the dishes. We have received death threats and had all sorts of vitriol thrown at us. The comments were made when [Helen] was very tired and had a few drinks. It was a bad choice of words, he told the Mirror.

Shropshire Councils regulatory services department confirmed they had received complaints in relation to the posts and police were photographed ar the Carlini Italian restaurant in Albrighton, Shropshire which is another restuarant owned by Goodman.

Many people were outraged by the chefs initial admission and raised questions about the ethical and health implications that putting animal products into a meal ordered by a customer who ordered a dairy and meat-free dish.

A commenter called Robbie replied on the post: You feed vegans (who have trusted you and presumably paid for their meals) non-vegan food, boast about it on social media in a group that represents quite a broad cross-section of society, and get roundly chastised , You then decide that the problem must be with all the people in the group, rather than your own reprehensible behaviour?

Another commenter called for Ms Goodman to be prosecuted for assault.

While Debbie Ireland, the admin of the Facebook group, told Metro.co.uk: I think people were outraged, as this could happen to any one of us, if that chef disliked you. Its quite unnerving, and makes you think twice about eating out anywhere, when you hear a chef and restaurant owner not only admitting to this, but gloating about it afterwards mentioning on other posts that she had just spiked a vegan. I cant imagine what else goes on at their eateries.

Carlini have now deleted their Facebook page following a barrage of complaints.

A spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency told Metro.co.uk: People should be confident about the food they buy and be able to choose according to their particular requirements, whether for diet and health or for personal taste and preference reasons.

The description, advertising or presentation of food must not mislead consumers. If someone is concerned about being sold food which has been falsely labelled or the information about the food does not properly describe it, they can report it to the businesss local authority.

lol. I've legit read posts like that on vegan facebook groups, if a bit exxagerrated some vegans really think people who eat meat deserve to die.

Eh, i think they should be able to sue her and get some money, but is this even techincally illegal? I mean its a pretty mean thing to do but unlike putting any bodily fluid in a persons meal is there a law on this?

First, death threats are never okay. They are never appropriate even if a party legitimately harmed a cause you care about.

Second, the chef fucked up. There is no getting around that even if you hate vegans or think their cause is preachy, or whatever. Food preparation is an industry that is inherently based around trust. People are putting an incredible about of trust in the chef that the food they are about the eat is safe and as described. If the chef was maintaining that a meal was vegan and then actively prepared a meal that was not vegan to that individual, the chef has fundamentally violated the trust that in necessary for food preparation industry to exist. That is the reason other chefs and the food standards agency are coming down on this.

This could very well kill her business. It should kill her business.

This is truly irresponsible. Not everyone who has a dietary restriction does so to have some sort of feigned moral superiority. My dad has an alpha-gal allergy that causes him to get very sick when he eats certain meats.
