Eve 6 Enemy
Solid pop-punk with a fairly anthemic chorus and a nice soft section. It sounds like montage music for every mid-2000's high school movie and that's not a bad thing.

Envy on the Coast - Numb
This does have pretty stellar vocals, usually it's not the type of thing I go for but for some reason I really like it on this track. Good change-ups too, you got the "Livin' on a Prayer" sound at 1:40, choir/piano interludes, that killer Soundgarden closing tag. Sick layering. It all works! I'm a fan.

Luniz - I Got Five On It
Accountability is what separates the homies from the skeezers. The oddly dramatic hook and classic laid-back beat are loaded with personal reefer-laced nostalgia that I look back fondly on and the combo is still catchy today. It may just be another song about drugs but an easy win for this week. MESSIN' WITH THAT INDO WEEED

E.G.G. a.k.a. COSIO - EU over Progress
Between prog and lounge, arcade and carnival, at the pit of man's kitsch and the summit of his technique. This is the dimension of expressive pads, strange chord patterns, and slightly obnoxious drumming. It is an area which we call...the Mycro Zone.

Lucy Dacus - Night Shift
A true grower that invites with intimacy and gradually snowballs into an indie juggernaut. Great vox/lyrics, maybe it takes a bit long to say what it needs to say but I appreciate it's scope and how personal it feels. I hope she ends up with a guy named Lucas Dacy.

The White Stripes - Apple Blossom
This one takes me back to junior high, I remember when I first picked up De Stijl I was disappointed that it mostly sounded like this (bluesy) and not so much like Seven Nation Army (heavy) - but it grew on me over those couple years and really familiarized me with the form. It's corny but authentic at the same time. I like the old saloon piano in this particularly and there's some nonstandard moves to keep it interesting...but after all these years I ultimately still wish it were a record full of Seven Nation Armys.

Ty Segall - Feel
Gritty and explosive with a sick guitar solo and even sicker drum solo. It pumps that eternally cool "When the Levee Breaks" riff with even more juice to knock the psychedelic rock vibe out of the park.

Lena - Traffic Lights
Dance-pop is a paradoxically hard sell for me. I want it to go beyond the proven formulas, timbral vocabularies, and songwriting blueprints to excite me and this is not that product. I want non-commercial dance pop. I know. This high standard is pretty hypocritical since I don't apply it to every genre - I just praised the Ty Segall song for reminding me of a seminal Zeppelin cut for instance - but I guess there's no accounting for taste.

I Monster - Daydream in Blue
I'm not so big on the descending chromatic line as its employed here but the sparseness of the session is appealing and I dig the " vintage am radio" compression on her voice. The good managed to neutralize the bad and I ended up with a pretty positive experience overall.

Opeth - Windowpane
I can safely say I don't remember how any Opeth song goes. I liked the part in the middle with the pedal tone thing, that felt like an odd progression. Somehow this is all way more mellow than I thought they were, even the climax is subdued here. I can't say the song grabs me for the majority of its eight minutes though, a lot of it left me absently floating.

Protostar & MakO - No Fire
Dubstep should just never leave the skronky part, 100% drop all the time get out of the kitchen if you can't handle it. The novelty of the deceptively basic verse has worn thin. This song isn't all bad, it holds my interest every other thirty seconds.

1. Luniz - I Got Five On It
2. Envy on the Coast - Numb
3. Ty Segall - Feel

I like to think of the Envy on the Coast song as a response to the Ty Segall song

you were right - this is their 70s prog rock album (back before they became a 70s prog rock band and did away with their death metal elements entirely)

sorry - real life shit

(1ST) Kirin J Callinan - S.A.D.
Opening and ending are a bit too strange, but the rest is fun and interesting.

(2nd) Ty Segall - Feel
Starts with a dope riff that hits hard. Guitar solo is a bit repetitive but I still feel it, and it really howls in the outro.

(3rd) Opeth - Windowpane
I like the shifts from 12/8 to 4/4 and back. Good guitar work. Nice drumming, especially in the middle. The low string part that enters at around 3:50 is very interesting.

Protostar, MakO, Rachel Hirons - No Fire
The dubstep is probably the best part of the song, actually...and the last, like, 40 seconds. Kinda like Lindsey Stirling but without the cool violin.

Luniz - I Got 5 On It
This is another one tinged with a bit of VGM sound - the bell loop sounds like Metroid or Goldeneye, some chill sci-fi thing. Not really into the rapping, though.

Lena - Traffic Lights
Not bad for cheesy fem-pop. Pretty good hook.

Lucy Dacus - Night Shift
Not sure it's good enough to justify being 6 1/2 minutes long. I do like that the drums finally come in, and the beat gradually evolves. Once the beat's really full at the end, it's pretty cool.

Envy on the Coast - Numb
Eh. Emo-rock ain't usually my thing. The guitar work toward the end is cool.

E.G.G. a.k.a. COSIO - EU over Progress
Very VGM-sounding. There were actually a few songs that had a VGM feel this week(s), but this was of course the most obvious of them, being the only instrumental. The tempo shift is jarring, as intended...not really sure about it. Sounds like it could be from a newer Megaman game, or like a hyper Bemani song at times.

Eve 6 - Enemy
Inside Out is more interesting, but this is OK. Pretty similar.

I Monster - Daydream in Blue
Nice 'n chill, though not especially interesting.

So, this is what the standings would like going 3-2-1 for 1st, 2nd, 3rd: (1st-place votes in parenthesis)

Feel 14 (1)
Windowpane 10 (3)
I Got 5 on It 9 (2)
Numb 9 (1)
S.A.D. 7 (1)
Daydream in Blue 5 (1)
EU over Progress 3 (1)
Apple Blossom 3 (1)
Traffic Light 2
Night Shift 1

digi's the only one who didn't list his 2nd and 3rd choice, but regardless of what he would have put, Feel would win using this system. If we're going just off 1st-place votes, Windowpane wins. VI's vote could possibly change things.

I can start the new topic later today, unless Bane or someone else wants to do it.

oops

1) Daydream in Blue
2) I Got 5 On It
3) Night Shift

Daydream and I Got 5 On It were close, gave it to Daydream simply because I've listened to I Got 5 On It a ton and never listened to that specific version of Daydream
