A tad sensationalist, only a few chips so far lost 30%, like the i5 750. Benches are still being done as I type this but so far most chips aren't losing near that much.

It's still bullshit though and I want a god damn refund.

I have an i7 Ivy CPU, and every time windows installs updates and then restarts, I get an error saying my CPU temp is too hot during the boot sequence, and then have to shut my PC off for 10 minutes to let it cool down.

And I've checked it before, and indeed it does overheat, but only when Windows updates are instsalled. Not when I'm playing games, not when I'm recording music, not when I'm doing anything else...just installing updates. Totally bizarre.

Wonder if my CPU has been damaged over the years.

How hot is it getting and how hot is it normally?

Everything I've read is that the IVY bridge runs pretty hot, and that's pretty normal. But 80 is a bit too much.

I am using just the stock cooler, though. Am perhaps I didn't apply the thermal paste correctly.

Maybe get a better cooler and make sure it has proper airflow.

It may be sensationalized for the wrong reasons, but this is still a very significant and fascinating discovery. The Pentium floating point error is infamous in the field of Computer Science, and this new design flaw is much more serious and far-reaching. This one will go down in the textbooks for sure.

well considering my load times are usually only a second or two that 30% will be pretty negligible. Glad this won't cause any real issues

https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/7nthay/a_quick_summary_of_the_current_intel_cpu_bug/

The issue impacts all modern Intel CPUs. (Edit: It's been confirmed that the latest unaffected CPU is the original Pentium.) According to an AMD engineer, "AMD processors are not subject to the types of attacks that the kernel page table isolation feature protects against. The AMD microarchitecture does not allow memory references, including speculative references, that access higher privileged data when running in a lesser privileged mode when that access would result in a page fault." In short, AMD does not have the bug.

Wow. That was 25 or so years ago. Incredible that this security vulnerability has been present for that long, and only now are we finding out about it exploitative nature. At least this means that the next generation Intel chips will be factored already, though I may just be switching chipsets next time I get a computer.

If successfully exploited, it could allow any program running on your computer (including a webpage with JavaScript) to access memory used by the operating system, giving it total control over your computer.

And it seems moreover that a part of the security issue is crucial to the speed of intel processors.

Supposedly this won't actually affect gaming too much. SSDs will be slightly slower, mostly. Those rendering video and running data centers are screwed for the time being, though.

But Intel have certainly damaged their reputation.

Does this mean netflix might become unusable for some time??

Most cloud computing will be. Mostly though it means if you want to take down a major company like Comcast you have 3 days to do it with no restrictions.

Edit: if you mean worse service somehow, most people will only see a drop in service when the maintenence updates are pushed out with it being unavailable. Cloud services don't rely heavily on processor power. Still though, these companies will probably buy more computers to make up for the load.

Oh and anyone who thinks this will somehow be worse for PC gaming, most prefab computers, consoles, and mobile devices use Intel processors. Apparently ARM processors are affected as well, at least according to the article. So essentially all devices will need patched and only the big players with massive development teams, or Linux which is open source, will be getting the patches first.

Honestly intellectual rights in America are to blame for shit like this. In the digital age copyright has no practical use except to scam people. If architectures were more widely available we wouldn't simply have 2 architectures that are arbitrarily good next to one another and that hide their dirty secrets.
