Cause we're too uncreative to call them something better. That's the real American part

Because all those tribes were never united under their own recognized nation. Different regions, different tribes. You have to call them something though if you're referring to them on the whole.

Yeah, they were called Indians, but that's offensive for some reason.

They were called Indians because this was supposed to be India and it just stuck. Makes me wonder...did the natives not know what to call the land itself?

It was actually America long before that. The landmasses/continents are called North and South America.

You know those early European explorers? When they landed in America they thought they were in India so they called the people there Indians. Later the British tried to fix it by eliminating all the natives, which they failed. So they took over India and tried to turn them into British, and they failed at that too.

Now we have to call the real Indians "East Indians" or "South Asians" to avoid getting them confused with the natives that are wrongfully accused of being Indians.

They had names for the land
For example, the name Alaska comes from the word Aleyska which means Great Land. I don't know what it's like back east but in the western half of the country, local Native names for locations are all over and used for rivers and towns and mountains

This is a really racist sounding post. I'm not sure if that was the intent or not, but the aboriginal people of the Americas all had fully developed and functional languages. It's just that everyone who spoke them was either killed or tortured until they started speaking English.

Did India have one language at the time? Maybe they just never knew. I'm sure you only had a handful of educated people at best on the boat

I'm not sensitive, I'm just pointing it out. You are literally arguing that the inhabitants of the land were so primitive that they didn't have words for basic concepts like land.

I think he was questioning whether there was a universal name for the entire land itself, which there wasn't, because it wasn't one nation.

If that's the case, then yeah, my mistake. That would depend from group to group and would depend entirely on how well each group mapped the area.

Kind of astonishing that "Indians" stuck, I mean within like a month the European explorers must have realized that they weren't in India.
