As we rapidly approach it's 3 year anniversary. The French cinema inspired slice of life meets Soft Sci-fi game has sold over 3 million copies, widely praised by (almost) anyone who has played it apart from Ross Scott, won several awards and is available on PC, PS3/4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Most importantly, part 1 (of 5) is FREE so there is no reason not to check it out to at least try it to see if you like it.

Meanwhile the statistics of people who played part 1 going on to play the entire game are incredibly high according to Square Enix.

Started out as a digital download exclusive that got a physical retail release due to popularity, followed by a successful prequel and an upcoming sequel.



IT also has the peculiar fan demographic of being popular among 13-19 year old girls and 21-35 year old men. Dominating the bulk of its sales.

Yet despite this punching above its weight and success, on CE you're more likely to meet someone who wants to punch you than someone who has tried it, even when it is free. So why do you think that is?

I liked it overall, but it didn't live up to all the hype. Definitely better than some of the other schlocky episodic series I've played, though.

But yeah I went into Before the Storm with loooooooooow expectations as I felt it had no reason to exist but then was very surprised as it's actually pretty great. I highly reccomend it if you liked the original.

Although it continues the tradition of the last episode being a mess.

I've had it for over a year now. It looks like a high school chick game. I haven't played it for that reason, but it was dirt cheap and I hear good things.

Yes. It's a walking simulator. It's like 90% dialogue. 8% walking. 1% picking a choice and 1% doing a "puzzle" where the puzzle is use the items you found right next to the thing to do the thing.

However compared to things like Dear Ester and Everyone's gone to the rapture, it's a lot closer to a game as Max actually has agency in the plot.

I suppose it's more akin to the Tell-tale episodic games that were super popular a while ago.

Well the chacters were written by 40 year old French men so I'm not so sure.

Personally my speculation is Two-Fold

It reminds me of a joke from Black books about a book called "Tempocalypse" that appeals to both genders which they sell to a couple

Wife: You know what we want?
Husband: We like different stuff.
Clerk: You're going on holiday, you want trash but different trash you women want social themes, believable characters. You men want plots, suspense. This'll do you both. This temp's 29, she can't get a boyfriend.
Husband: Oh, my God.
Wife: Sounds great.
Husband: No way.
Clerk: And she's got 12 hours to stop a nuclear war.
Husband .... All right.
Clerk: One each, then

1. It's a college drama dealing with bullying, moving away from home and how you deal with friends.... Appeals to girls.... And also you have magical time-control powers and it's a race against time to save the town from destrution... Appeals to guys.

2. Because it's story heavy and goes for a nostagalic feeling of "the past" which I thing appeals to young girls and aging men. Not so much to young boys and aging women.

I don't think 17 year old boys think back about the kids they knew when they were 11 and moved on from. But I think 17 year old girls and 25 year old boys might well do.

I think if you made a compilation of every time that chick says hella, it would be like 20 minutes long.

Like someone pointed out above, its an entirely plot/dialogue based game about teenage American girls written by middle-aged French guys. There are virtually zero lines that stick the landing or feel authentic, which really muddies what could otherwise have possibly been interesting. If that doesnt bother you, I get why it could be enjoyable, but I just cant deal. I only got as far as I did (Chapter 4, iirc) because my sister and I made a joke out of it when I lived at home. Wed grab some beers and just cackle at how painful the dialogue was.

I'll give it more credit than a lot of critics.

For starters a lot of people forget it's set in 2013, so the memes aren't as dated as it seemed in 2015 or now.

For two, they're meant to be teenager hipsters, one main character is a nerd and the other is a nerd who is trying to act like a rebelious punk with no real experience and failing because they're a sheltered nerd.

I actually think the fact they both say stupid things and dated memes and completely fail at being cool is good writing, not bad writing. That's how most teens I know act, they reference shit and say stupid things.

I guess you could still argue the game failed at getting this across though since so many people hated the weird dialogue, especially Chloes.

I don't think Chloe was ever supposed to sound like a badass, I think she was always supposed to sound like a lovable loser. Although that may be bias on my part as I really don't like Chloe.

I did.

It was a stupid game.

Played 1.5 episodes, didn't like the story at all, especially the dialogue. The time manipulation was fun in that I could try out all dialogue options without re-loading like in the Telltale games but the dialogue was filled with cringy Juno-style "quirky-ness", and I apparently figured out who the bad guy was almost immediately (I'm fucking Sherlock. son) so I'm not that inclined to finish it.

I heard the prequel is better in that regard and there's no Ashly Burch so I might check it out one day.

Before the Storm was my favorite game of 2017. I think it improved upon the first game in every single aspect. I loved it.

Maybe if the entire episode was a debate or if there was a third party there, but as it was written, after straight out saying she wouldn't, I don't see her invalidating the game and making her actions useless that quick. Because with a third party, they'd be the visual representation of the people.

Because the game looks like trash. It was free with gwg not long ago, and even free doesn't make me want to try it. Maybe if it was an actual game, not some sim bullshit walking game with a reset button. But yeah. Hellokitty games look more intuitive than life is strange.
