Like I said in the OP, I have a couple of theories about the overall plot so I guess I'll get into those.

1. Byakuya wasn't Byakuya

This might be a stretch, but I'm a little suspicious about Byakuya in this game. Ignoring the obvious thing about him being overweight, his personality seemed... off. Byakuya in the first game was a selfish jerk, making it very clear that he didn't care for any of his fellow students and repeatedly showed no empathy whenever someone died. This is the guy who in Case 2 stumbled upon the crime scene first and chose to alter it just to make the investigation harder on everyone else for his own amusement. He was arrogant, pretentious, and didn't care about anyone.

But in this game, all of a sudden he seems to care a lot about his fellow students. He takes it upon himself to be the leader and vows to protect everyone. He even makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect Nagito. Now if that's not the most out of character thing Byakuya could possibly do I don't know what is. So I'm inclined to believe that maybe Byakuya wasn't what he seemed.

2. The events of DR1 and DR2 are happening simultaneously

Now this only works if theory 1 is correct, since Byakuya obviously appears in both games. So the ancient ruins look exactly like Hope's Peak Academy. Hajime himself even points it out. They even draw attention to the door on the front locking them out... which looks exactly like the door locking the DR1 students in. What if both games are happening at the same time? Sure the outside of the ruins looks bad, but the inside could be perfectly fine. When the DR1 students left the school at the end of the first game we actually didn't see what was on the other side of the door. They could have very well have been on the island. I know that the school is shown to be in the middle of a city, but what if that was just a fake memory implanted in their minds? If their memories can be stolen, then they can have fake ones put in, right?

I was sad to see Ibuki go, but I cheered out loud when I found Hiyoko's body.

Overall, with the ambiance of the venue and just how dark the body discoveries were, I think that's one of my favorite body discoveries in the series.

I'm not sure about this one. I think there are a few hints pointing to Mikan, but I'm not confident about that.

For what it's worth, Mikan was a big blindside to me. I actually suspected Gundham during almost all of case 3, since you run into him in the parking lot after leaving the venue. I figured that he was finishing arranging the scene and just ran right into you after that, so I had him as my #1 suspect for the entire case. #2 was Sonia for the reason you mentioned (she directed Hiyoko to the venue). I didn't actually catch the Mikan stuff at all until late in the case.

I noticed Mikan was too eager to perform the autopsy, which she never had been before.

Also, I found it a little dissappointing that they sort of brushed Hiyoko's murder aside.

The tipoff for me was the heater being on. It's not even really brought up in trial, but I figured that the only person who would think to do that would be someone with medical training. Sure she could've just faked the time of death, but if she got found out it would've been bad, so by doing the heater thing she was able to make an excuse for not giving a time.

Granted she still had to fake the autopsy, but I think that was a necessary risk that unfortunately for her didn't work out.

It's a shame that Nekomaru/Mechamaru was a really obvious victim. As soon as he started showing off his functions, I was like, "Yeah, this is going to be part of a case for sure".

I was really sad to see him go, though.

So after I finish up this game I was wanting to check out the Danganronpa 3 anime, but it's not on Crunchy Roll and actually buying the seasons is damn expensive. Will I just have to put down the money to watch it?

Note that if you care about getting the total package and the absolute full story, you should either play or watch Ultra Despair Girls after DR2. It has a decently large role in the anime, including an episode pretty much entirely dedicated to it. It's ultimately up to you there, though.

Just know that the anime isn't anything special. It's decent but the games are generally a lot better.

Also, you gotta watch them in airing order. Future 1 -> Despair 1 -> Future 2 etc

And don't watch the dub. It was a complete failure.

Agreed on all accounts really. The main reason to watch the anime is because it answers questions leftover from the first two games, but it's definitely not amazing. (Though, Juzo is a top tier character across the entire series)

And yeah, you should watch in the alternating order. Crunchyroll has them in that order already, so just follow their order really. It can be a bit jarring at times, but it's designed to be watched like that.

I didn't watch the dub because I had heard it was horrible, but I saw some clips after I watched it, and it honestly seems like a joke dub. It's like someone took a real dub and made an Abridged version like those YGO/DBZ Abridged series. It's just that bad. Definitely watch the subs for the anime, and I say that as someone who usually prefers dubs.

I'll agree to her being an awesome villain. I hate her so much, there's a scene in the DR3 anime that always makes a knot in my stomach.
