The entire reason I stopped at 10 was the lack of turn based ATB. Well 10 was an awful games despite it. 9 was the last good FF.

Turn based combat can be good and is harder to fuck up. Look at 15 for example, that's probably one of the worst "Action" RPG's in the last 5 years. That battle system is a joke and would have been a lot better if it was turn based.

You could do this for 90% of the battles in the original though.

I'll agree a lot of them get to the point where you are over powered and battles are nothing but button mashing too. But that's a flaw in using turned based ATM. Whereas hack and slash and beat em up never change. The difficulty just rises to your power levels and the only change you have to make is whether you can pull of a 6 button combo in 3.2 seconds to be successful.
