I can't even begin to name how many comedies have their main characters drown their sorrows in booze. And half the time they treat it as a problem (You're the Worst, BoJack Horseman, etc...), or it's glazed over (Always Sunny, Two and a Half Men, etc...)

Is... is this just the writers making what they know, or is it just a common trope? But alcoholism is a giant problem, and I understand most of the adults writing these shows know that real people drinking as much as these fictional characters isn't a joke. And those same alcoholics are shitshows who no self-respecting people will ever associate with.

So... what's the deal?

Comedy is often a coping mechanism for pain.

So is alcohol. The same psychological pain that has helped them develop such enjoyable humor can often also drive them to find an escape in alcohol or drugs.
