The story as I understood it:

Hogan went to a wife-swapping party and fucked his friend's wife.
His friend had secret cameras in the room an sold the footage to gawker for an undisclosed sum.
Gawker put the sex tape online.
Hogan threatened them to take it down.
Gawker refused.
Hogan sued them.
Gawker released private phone calls of Hogan being racist, getting him fired.
Hogan escalated the case with funding from Peter Thiel who was mad that Gawker outed him as a gay homosexual years before.
Gawker held their ground and really thought they could win the case.
After a few years Gawker lost the case.
Hogan was awarded $140 million dollars by the court.
Gawker appealed and lost the appeal.
Gawker did not have 140 million dollars.
Gawker offered a settlement of 31 million dollars which was all they had, Hogan accepted.
Gawker shut down because it was broke. Leaving hundreds unemployed.

What would have happene if Hogan did not accept the settlement? The court awarded him 140 million and they didn't have it. I mean even if Gawker said it was Bankrupt they'd surely still have to give what money they did have to Hogan anyway, so what's the point in a settlement at all?

Just seems weird to award someone 109 million dollars that the court surely knows doesn't exist and can't be paid...

Gawker was so stupid about this whole thing. Not only did they refuse to take the video down, they actually mocked Hogan about it on their site and repeatedly kept bumping it back to the front page.

And this was after the fappening, during which Gawker took a hard stance against publishing celebrities private photos.

They kept blaming Peter Thiel all the way up to their last days as if his involvement negated the fact that what they were doing was wrong.
