Walmart is boosting the minimum hourly wage for its U.S. employees to $11 and dishing out bonuses of up to $1,000, crediting President Trump's tax cut for enabling the move.

The increase for the nation's largest private employer also comes amid political pressure to bolster minimum wages.

The big-box store chain has more than 1 million U.S. hourly employees.

Today, we are building on investments weve been making in associates, in their wages and skills development, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. Its our people who make the difference and we appreciate how they work hard to make every day easier for busy families.

The wage increase will take effect in February. Walmart said the one-time bonuses would cost the company $400 million and will be based on the length of service. Employees who have worked for at least 20 years will get the full $1,000.

The company is also boosting its paid maternity leave policy for full-time hourly workers to 10 weeks and increasing its paid paternity leave policy to six weeks.

Walmart also said it would offer financial help to employees who are seeking to adopt children.

Great news! However, I feel it's too late due to the fact that you have folks out here demanding $15 an hour being replaced by kiosks and other automated services.

People are being replaced by machines because they're demanding $15/hr. That innovation accelerated when employers realized it might be cheaper in the near future to "hire" machines, based on how much liberals were bitching about a massive minimum wage increase.

Bonus + increase in pay + savings from income tax ought to leave a lot of people with at least a few thousand in disposable income per year.

Walmart employs 1 million hourly employees.

This means we need to educate people on the virtues of living within your means and saving/investing.

The average car loan is now something like $500 per month not including insurance and gas. People have a spending problem in this country.

Can't you just go back to your "tax cuts are bad" schtick?

I mean... if you were a shareholder wouldn't you be pushing your CEO to go towards the more efficient automation anyway? using a livable wage and blaming it on liberals is a good excuse though.

A lot of people don't know how to handle money, especially in a windfall.

Which is a shame. This increase in income could be invested into stocks or cryptocurrency for easy gains.

Some stocks skyrocketed in 2017 and will do the same in 2018. And cryptocurrency (while risky speculation) can easily turn $1,000 into $10,000.

Yeah, that's why I said the innovation accelerated. It was going to happen anyway, but because of liberals' incessant whining, it happened faster.

It is not Walmart's responsibility to teach fiscal responsibility. That is what parents and schools are for.

American spending habits result in increasing consumer debt which ends up causing economic crashes. You can only finance so much shit before you have to declare bankruptcy lol.

Capitalism is cyclical in nature, there are going to be booms and crashes no matter what anybody does. But yes, the booms reach higher (and more fragile) and the crashes hit lower due to bad consumerism.

If perfect consumerism could be achieved then capitalism would be a stable system but that is not realistic

Except that in the United States, we do not practice pure Capitalism. We have regulations and social policies that help stabilize this cyclical nature you're referring to.

It's interesting to me, without all the backlash of the tax bill, would some of these companies still have felt a strong desire to give these benefits?

Plus, you have to question if these were already going to happen anyway, and the timing to announce it now was just too good to pass up

True, but they have 1 million hourly workers. They can't give out boatloads of bonuses without bankrupting their operation and sending everyone home.

The higher wage, some bonus, better benefits, and more savings from a smaller income tax are a fantastic step in the right direction. We can thank the tax cuts for enabling these things.

That's fine but I have a feeling with the amount Walmart will save altogether they will invest a large portion into automating other parts of their business model and be able to cut back on labor and wages in the near future.

Which company was it that recently gave out bonuses one week then fired thousands of employees the next?

what i read is that this most recent minimum wage increases, along with the bonuses, maternity leave increase, and adoption aid are all because of the tax cuts.
