Yes No View Results 1960's KKK Leader Edgar Ray Killen who was convicted of the "Mississippi Burning" murders of 3 Civil Rights workers that advocated for equality, has died in Prison at the age of 92..and before his death he STILL had Racist views!! Edgar Ray Killen served 3 consecutive 20 year terms for manslaughter when he died at 9pm in Mississippi 20 year olds James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were ambushed and killed by klansmen. The 3 Freedom Summer workers were investigating the burning of a black church when a sheriff arrested them on a traffic charge. They were then released after the sheriff alerted a mob of klansmen. The governor at the time clamed their disappearance was a HOAX before their bodies were dug up. The murders were dramatized in the 1988 movie "Mississippi Burning" that shocked the nation and helped spur the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. Edgar was a part time preacher and lumber mill operator when he was convicted of 3 counts of manslaughter in 2005 despite claiming he was "innocent". He was the only person ever to face state murder charges. Andrew Goodman's younger brother, David Goodman said "It wasn't even murder, it was manslaughter. His life spanned a period in this country where members of the KKK like him were able to believe they had a right to take other people's lives, that's a form of terrorism. Many took black lives without impunity" He said that the death is a reminder that issues of racism and white nationalism remain today as he poined out the violent rally of white nationalists in Charlottesville. Edgar served as a kleagle or organizer of the Klan in Neshoba County as he worked as he operated a sawmill. 19 men were indicted on federal charges in 1967, 7 were convicted of violating the victims civil rights and none served more than 6 years. Killen's case ended in a HUNG JURY because a woman couldn't convict a "preacher". Edgar said in his last interview that he remained a SEGREGATIONIST and didn't believe in racial equality but said he had no ill will to black people but that he truly believed white people were the "superior race" and had every god given right to act upon their superiority..
