Yeah, I dont see flying cars possible. Magnetically-levitating cars, sure. Flying Deloreans, no.

Probably because of The Jetsons.

Plus you're forgetting about AI controlled vehicles.

The biggest issue with flying cars would eventually be the logistics, but self driving cars are coming so in theory if vehicles can drive themselves human error will be kept to a minimum which would also apply to flying vehicles.

That said, I don't expect civilian owned flying vehicles any time soon. The issue with that right now isn't even the logistics, it's making personalized flying vehicles safe and cost effective that work without a huge take off and landing zone.

Oh could convert bigger parking lots. Or connect the roof of certain building together.

They'd just have airspace restrictions. Like how planes do.

I demand a flying car. Everything will be fine as long as only I am allowed to have one.

There's enough friction with the air to bring it in to flight so that's no issue, the traction is consistent with speed so steering is relatively reliable and drivers aren't limited to tight lanes in 2D space so have a lot of 3D maneuverability.

The real issue is landing vast amounts of traffic in a tight window.

Not really a total ban, just a ban on unauthorised use by hobbyist grade drones. Get yourself a license and a quality drone and you could land it at the airfield, much like the restrictions on cars on the road.

Flying cars wouldn't be piloted by people for all kinds of logistical reasons.

This, tbh. It's the only real way to handle the logistical challenges unless flying cars were restricted to lanes of traffic (although even then you'd have the issue of falling cars...)

Given the safety and cost issues, I imagine that it wouldn't so much be a civilian thing as an affordability issue. As for the takeoff and landing, you doesn't need a runway. They would likely offer vertical propulsion like a jetpack. The needs really depend on the technology.

However, the biggest issue is -- just like a helicopter -- mechanical failure is basically a death sentence. At least with cars you have *some* chance of walking away. There's not much you could feasibly do for a flying car since even an option like an ejection seat (with an attached parachute) might not work well depending on the angle at which you're falling.

It's a total ban within city limits and with a permit you can use them outside of town (with restrictions). Permits don't allow you to use a drone in the city and lol at landing it at the airfield, absolutely not allowed.

I said license, not permit. An unmanned aircraft (a drone) can land at airfields, your toy cannot.

Well, assuming there is an ejection and parachute system like jets, people inside the flying vehicles might be safe if there is mechanical failure, but everybody below where the vehicle crashes would be screwed.

I did a quick google and ejection seats exist that self right and some that launch down rather than up.

Ah yes, propelling the driver towards the ground below the plummeting 2-ton vehicle should increase their odds of survival
