As a solar company, we are devastated to learn Trump has imposed a 30% tariff on solar panels virtually killing the solar industry. Solar employs more people than coal and oil combined. today's decision will cause the loss of roughly 23,000 American jobs this year.

It's a long Twitter thread. So what are your thoughts on this? Is he wrong? Discuss

That solar is a weak energy source and contributes less than 1% of our electricity generation despite being by far the most well-funded of the "green" energies, so it should lose its govt subsidies immediately.

People almost always bring up the other side's bad choices to deflect from the topic at hand... Especially when people compare Trump to Obama. Obama did as much criminally as Trump has, even what people are calling for Trump to be impeached... Hell, he did worse. Selling weapons to criminals, Hilary sold Uranium to Russia.. Etc.

so you think the government has a right to determine which industries are "failing" and should impose tariffs on said "failing" industries to accelerate their failure? why not let the free market decide that? how come you hate government intervention in the market in almost all instances, but this intervention is fine, IYO?

If you're asking if I like tariffs as a general rule, no I don't. But the idea that Trump's tariff will negatively affect US solar jobs is wrong. The "NOW1SOLAR" account on Twitter doesn't give any sources for their slew of tweets, but they appear to be referring to solar jobs globally. The only info I can find regarding US solar companies is if these tariffs will be enough to save them.

https://www.bizjournals.com/portland/news/2018/01/22/trump-oks-solar-tariffs-in-partial-victory-for.html

As I already told you, solar is a dying industry. The tariffs will serve to show whether the industry in America is failing because of international competition, or because solar just isn't profitable. My money is on the latter.

solar installation employs more americans than solar manufacturing. a rise in the cost of panels will reduce american labor to install new panels.

Unless all of these companies that are being negatively affected by this are just reselling cheap Chinese panels (in which case, fuck 'em), tariffs should be helping to make their jobs more secure, not less.

And guess what? The EU is doing the exact same thing to protect their local manufacturers from the Chinese dumping their panels, and I don't see anyone here bitching about that.

the majority of US jobs in solar are for installing solar panels, not making them at all.

the EU has far fewer fees associated with installation than we do, which is why we have subsidized solar, essentially paying our own fees. solar install in europe is much cheaper than here and was even before the tariff. after, we're probably back to like 2015 prices.

Sure. I'm not going to sit here, and say "What flaws does Trump have?", when anyone with eyes can tell that he has flaws. That's what makes him relatable. That's what makes him common even with a shit ton of money, and before you say he doesn't have as much money as he used to have. Fuck off with your liberal "His failed businesses!!!" bullshit. He still has a shit ton of money moreso than you, same with Obama, same with Hilary, same with Bernie "BS" Sanders...
