Literally like every song the first verse is like 12-16 lines... and the second is 4 or less. And then straight to the bridge. When did this become a thing?

Maybe even the people who sing it don't want to listen to it for too long.

It isn't just country songs doing this from what I've seen. Rock bands have had shorter second verses for years.

Huh. Do you know what led to this in music?

And thx. I appreciate it.

Honestly its probably market research

If youre purposefully looking to make popular music, algorithms have improved to the point where theyre figuring out how to construct music that is at least somewhat appealing to the widest amount of people.

No clue. If I had to take a guess on it, it might be because most bands/artists recognize the chorus as the thing that hooks people into a song, but also uses the first verse to kinda set the setting for the song.

A few examples I can think of from rock/metal with long opening verses but short second verses are the following...

- Quite a few songs by Breaking Benjamin ("Breath", "I Will Not Bow", "Failure")
- "Wasted Years" by Iron Maiden
- "Judas" by Fozzy (this one I just found myself listening to yesterday and caught it)

Admittedly, most of these don't have lyrical bridges (Maiden's bridge in Wasted Years is a guitar solo), but you get the jist of it

This makes me so sad.... I always loved stories of music. And the bridge and chorus ain't it.
