Also, none of the other knights of Ren were shown to wear one. The only conclusion we can draw is that Kylo just showed up to work one day wearing this scary mask and refused to take it off. Imagine if you walked into work tomorrow wearing a sombrero. And your boss was like "Dude, take that off," but you wouldn't. But you're just irreplaceable enough to not take drastic measures over the sombrero, so the issue just gets dropped.
