I never understood why they changed their name. the channel didn't really change. its literally the same stuff before and after the name change. usually when a channel changes it's name it changes it's style. not the case here. also, I still don't know what CW stands for . I know WB was Warner Brothers

It's because they merged the WB and UPN and needed to rebrand because both networks were doing terribly outside of Simpson's, 7th Heaven and Married with Children reruns.

supernaturals first season was on the WB IIRC but i didnt watch that one at the time
charmeds final season was on the CW
which is a shame since its one of its worst seasons and the previous season ended the series at a great point

I'm old enough to remember before that channel was WB.
It was just another local channel out of LA for years. All it was was old game shows, old movies and old sitcoms endlessly. All garbage tier. Then some local news.

I clearly remember those two networks, but never paid enough attention to either one for their disappearance to be a big concern - they were kinda just gone suddenly.

technically WB didn't disappear it just changed it's name. CW is WB, after the rebranding.

Yep. Practically all of UPN's shows got cancelled. And considering that UPN had a ton of Black sitcoms airing on it, this was rather controversial among Black viewers.
