Like the 15km-wide one that lead to the dinosaurs' extinction?

What would we do to stop it?

If it's still far enough away, Yes. Use gravity to change it's orbit just enough so that it misses Earth.

I read somewhere that if the asteroid is 6 miles in diameter, you know, the size class that brought extinction to the dinosaurs. If that were on its way to earth, we wouldnt be able to destroy it with our current tech even nukes. But we can use them to use the force they create to try to change its course so it would narrowly miss us.

How do we do that?

Putting something in orbit around the asteroid to throw it's trajectory off

We used Bruce up on the last one.

nuke it. If the individual debris are small enough, they will be disintegrated by the atmosphere

Hum, it has nothing to do with the firepower of our weapons, which wouldn't work well in space anyway because there's no matter.

The problem would be noticing there's an asteroid on a collision course and being able to hit it. Our maneuverability in space is dogshit, basically, and heavily reliant on gravity assists to get anywhere. Asteroids that aren't in very predictable orbits are near impossible to hit, hell, it took us literally 10 years to land a probe on a well known comet with the rosetta.

We would just put up a space net and catch it, tag it and then release it back into the wild.

All we have to do is claim the scientists are wrong and there is no giant asteroid heading for us. Problem solved.

A bunch of heat and radiation with no shockwave because there's no air, basically. It would be a fraction of the destructive force it is on earth and pretty much useless. You'd be better off trying to land a probe and then using the thrusters to try and slightly nudge the asteroid enough to make it miss the planet.

That's why we wait for it to enter Earth's atmosphere before firing off our nukes.

Maybe that's why Trump is the greatest prez in world history.

He's trying his damnedist to increase our coal and oil usage. It'll pollute the atmosphere so much that the asteroid would break up upon coming in contact with it, ala The Simpsons.
