Eh. The main problem is that unless you're fortunate enough to be able to live at home with parents/family, you are paying everything entirely by yourself. So that's rent, utilities, phone bill/Internet, groceries and most likely a car payment, insurance and other vehicle related expenses. Probably more that I'm forgetting. A student loan + even working part time isn't nearly enough to cover all of those.

While you could still go to school and work full time, it's really not an ideal situation since you're probably not getting enough sleep and your mental well-being will be in the shitter. Obviously some people can do it and they come out fine on the other end, but it's not for everyone.

The funny thing is that I visit the old retail stores I used to work at and my old co-workers are still working there after 7 years.... these are the same people that said they would either find a better job or go back to school.... that was 7 fucking years ago.

I make roughly $40-50 an hour at my retail job during this time of year and closer to $70-80 during the holiday season due to it being commission based. Not leaving anytime soon.

Edit: This is me taking me weekly check and dividing it by the number of hours I work which is 40. I don't actually make an hourly.

Pretty much everyone I know who can't seem to get out of retail has unplanned kids at the root of their problem. Debt and strife from that carries over to everything, including transportation, childcare, healthcare, and snowballs until you have a broke down husk of a person with few options and little hope. Some people can get out of it with gumption and help from family and friends but a lot of people are already tapped out from breaking their backs to keep things together while barely scraping by and really need a massive, borderline miraculous break to get things going into something bigger and better.

I was able to get my life started, move in with my gf, and raise a baby on a drivers salary

and im now saving to buy a property in the future

There are ways to move up in retail.

Sister in law spent 10 years in retail. From when she was 16. She's now the manager of a decent sized store, making nearly 6 figures. No university debt, 26 years old.

That's pretty damn good. Does it happen to everyone? No, not even close. But not every carpenter ends up a project manager either.

So once we enact this magical plan to make it so people no longer have to work retail who is going to manage and run said retail establishments?
