Fine I'll bite. Tales games have really good combat, but which one particularly stands out?

All of them

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song

Um... I did try it. There seems to be a big difference between the Romancing and the Frontier series, I haven't liked R.Sagas. Similar to SMT vs Persona.

KH2, Nier A, and SO4 are are action RPGs.

From Japan...
JRPG = Japanese RPG

When people think JRPG, they think turnbased. Obviously this isn't always the case, but something like Nier is very much Western-influenced, and is more of an ARPG

Most people will count Star Ocean and Tales as JRPGs.

Right both Tails and Star Ocean are. Arguing they are not because they are not turn based is just silly. Action RPG and JRPG can intercept. Really Star Ocean is like a close cousin to Tales, with a 3D battle field instead of a 2-D one and a space opera back drop.

Brah just stop. Jrpg = any rpg from Japan. Turn based combat was never a requirement for an rpg. Even if you dont agree (youre wrong) were just arguing semantics at this point.

People are arguing that turn-based = JRPG?

Do they know they're wrong?

i don't know how people can hate grandia 3 but then love the shit out of 2
at least 3 ends up actually having enemies powerful enough to justify the battle system's existence

Oh sure, there's a big difference. Frontier 1 mixes in some mechanics from the Game Boy games (and DS remakes) with robots, monsters, mystics etc. It also has a completely different setting from the Romancing series, which are all quite more regular fantasy. I think the PS2 remake is super nice, and what it has in common with Frontier 1 is its complete open-endedness. As well as, of course, staples such as glimmering skills in combat and combo attacks. Depending on what turned you off, you might be more inclined to look at Romancing SaGa 2 and 3. IMO they're both better than 1, and definitely more deserving of a remake than 1 was.
As for The Last Remnant, it's more story-driven, like Frontier 2, although there's a ton of side quests to do. It's not technically a SaGa game, but a lot of the mechanics are still there, the same people made it, and it was internally titled SaGa for a while, so it's as much of a spiritual successor as you'll be able to find. I think it's quite enjoyable, and I like the twist on the formula where characters are instead small squads.

Actually, as far as "spiritual successors to Saga" goes, I've already preordered Alliance Alive even though I eventually got bored of Legend of Legacy. My main problem with LoL was having only 3 party members; one of which who should spam shield skills, and the other who should spam magic contracts. In the end, only one character was fighting so random battles were pretty slow.
Alliance Alive lets you use 5 at a time and you don't have to spam magic contracts.

That's interesting. I bought LoL, but haven't gotten very far yet. I feel similarly to you about the party size. I'll keep an eye on AA and see how it seems.
