Kingdom Hearts II fits the two JRPG definitions people argue about around here. It is both a RPG developed in Japan (which automatically makes it a JRPG according to some), and it's an RPG that has a bunch of JRPG elements such as being heavily story driven, having a bunch of cutscenes, command menu, party members, mini games, level-based growth, classic Japanese tropes, among other things (which makes it a JRPG according to the people who don't agree that JRPG = RPG developed by Japanese people.)

gotta be honest i like simple battle systems over complex ones
dragon quest, duel orb 2, phantasy star 4
they dont have much complexity to them but are simple and to the point
i do like live a lives and treasure hunter G
and i like treasure of the rudras mantra system.

I can respect simple, I guess. Ngl I do actually prefer gimmicks, myself (Eternal Sonata with its real-time+turn-based thing, SMT/Persona with weakness exploitation giving you extra turns, that sort of thing), but I can also respect sticking to what works.

Treasure Hunter G looks interesting, and I've actually been meaning to check out Treasure of the Rudras for a while now. What's that one like?

basically the world is going to end in 15 days and you play through 3 scenarios with different party members all over the world and how they spent those 15 days and what major things they did to help save the world.

then on the last day the lead character from each scenario teams up for the final day
the magic system lets you type in a word and it will be turned into a spell
there are some cheat spells you can create by looking them up like a spell that heals most of your HP for all party members for just 1 MP

Not only is the game in general GOAT, but the battle system brings Attack Ranges from Strategy RPGs (fave genre) to the Turn Based RPG, and adds on to it letting you shove your enemies around for combos, and to improve the combos you can swap your turn order. Unlike every other RPG, your mages aren't the only ones using MP and they give you the right amount to use it every battle yet still make ethers useful.

I havent played any of the souls game. Ive only played blood borne and it didnt interest me much. Maybe I didnt get far enough.

I thought the combat was abysmal in a lot of those. I had fun with Symphonia, but that was 10 years ago. Xillia 1/2 sets horrible games with clunky battle systems.

Honestly genres have been in trouble ever since Zelda 2, but especially when every other modern game started having "rpg-like" leveling mechanics. Like personally I wanna call Zelda games "adventure" genre but thats already taken by Myst/Riven and Kings Quest.

I am pretty sure most people draw the line between action-rpgs and j-rpgs as being turnbased or not though.

I dunno. I found Grandia 3 to be meh as all hell. Not nearly as good as Grandia 2.

MMBN was a great series with excellent combat because of the customization between battle chips (like a full unicode folder, a folder with only a few codes for pas and combos, etc) Navicust system also offered unique ways for everyone to play, in addition to styles.

Legend of Dragoon has satisfying turn based combat tbh, between the additions, how guarding can heal you a little and reduce damage, and how items all had good uses and could be powerful should you tap x fast enough, everything in LoD felt great and worked perfectly together. The inventory system was also quite good, with a limited amount of slots in the inventory, but items actually being fairly useful (especially the permanent usage items) The accessories also felt powerful when you could get specific ones (bandit shoes was a huge speed boost, for instance.)

KH2 can feel like auto combat at times, but when you really look into the skills and combos it's really like a watered down DMC, though i'm sure crazy juggling is possible. Reflect is far too powerful though, and the itemizing is almost non existant (build accessory with AP and STR or MAG, build armour with DEF and resistance to one of 4 elements, or all 4 elements.)

Mario and Luigi seres - I've only played superstar saga and Bowser's Inside Story, but the combat is very unique, practically every enemy has tells specific to each brother, the combo attacks feel great to perfect and execute while also looking flashy. The equipment was always interesting to read, but I recall constantly getting items to heal in the first game, to the point I almost never needed to buy any items, and if I did it was usually super nuts to heal both brothers. Maybe max nuts but I can't remember if those were sold

I agree that Golden Sun is like the most cookie cutter JRPG you could find. But Riviera is decidedly more J, to the point where it's as much dating sim/visual novel as it is RPG. If you understand what I mean.
And I agree that Riviera's battles aren't Rivieting, but this is the kind of opinion where wrong and right actually don't exist.

SaGa Frontier 1, great battles

Good taste, but I wonder... I mean having two different skill points was un-neccessary but it wasn't harmful. I loved how you learned skills mid-battle and got a discount for focusing on magic or weapons. Could never figure out the combos (Virgil sucked) but they were neat when they happened.

Honestly I was chronically addicted to this game for the longest time, so I'm biased but I think it might be a good nomination. Too bad it was unfinished...

I see it a bit less strictly than that. To me, JRPG means an RPG that is characteristically Japanese, like a style of game. There's a whole set of things that are typical, and the game should have many of those traits. Not necessarily all, but enough. But I would argue that Golden Sun tends more to JRPG, while Riviera tends more to J, if we imagine a spectrum like this:
J --- JRPG --- (W)RPG

Blindsides are about it, and not all characters can really take advantage of it. Also, only needed for one boss.

Rage is something Tales has had since at least Symphonia.

Also, attack magic sucks in SO4.
