FRANKLIN, Tenn. - An act of bullying caught on camera at a Williamson County high school has gained attention online and forced the victim's mother to speak out.

The Snapchat video showed a teenage boy at Franklin High School walk up behind a teenage girl only to yank her wig off her head and runaway. The text over the video said "weave snatchin."

The girl's mother took to Facebook to express her outrage and concern.

"Yesterday I received a call from my youngest daughter screaming and crying on the phone, for me to come and get her from school.

Apparently, some boys had taken a $5 BET about pulling her wig off in front of everyone. Lulu has a scalp condition that causes severe dryness and hair breakage and loss, and had been so ashamed of her appearance that she had taken to wearing wigs in an effort to still feel beautiful. We all know how easy it is to feel insecure at age 16.
...
These kids not only tore her wig off in the middle of school, but video taped it. They followed her to the bathroom as she screamed and cried and proceeded to tape her OVER the stall as she cried and begged for her wig.
Later I had to take her to the hospital for abrasions and whiplash.

Lulu later decided to shave her hair off and not let these bullies win. She was not wanting to feel controlled by her hair any longer, and take back her control. I am only posting this with her permission but yesterday our entire family was angered and in tears about the way she was treated.

The teen suicide rate has now DOUBLED and bullying has played a HUGE Role.

If you have a teen in this situation, continue to uplift them and let them know that they are strong and beautiful and can own thier insecurities and take control rather than being controlled.

I admire the strength and beauty of my little Lulu and know that she will inspire many others even through this difficult time in her life.

#SayNoToShaming2018

Please share Lulus story if you have or know a teen who needs to know they are beautiful no matter what! Lets empower other young girls to reclaim Thier Power!
Bullies will not win in 2018."

Officials with Williamson County Schools released the following statement regarding the incident.

The Franklin High administration and the School Resource Officer immediately began investigating an incident when it was reported to them Friday afternoon. This type of behavior can never be tolerated at school. In addition to school discipline, WCS prosecutes delinquent behavior to the fullest extent of the law.

The wig was glued and pinned to Lauren's scalp, she was left with chunks of her hair missing. However, the pain was much more than physical. She says she was tormented by a student with a camera as she tried to hide in the bathroom. She followed me in there, was laughing, videotaping me over the stall, Lauren said.

After the incident, Lauren decided to send a strong message by shaving her head. My hair was one of my biggest insecurities so I felt like he had taken my power and I wanted it back, explained Lauren. "When I walk around with a bald head hell know that he didnt do anything but give me more power to speak out to other people.

The Williams plan to prosecute the students involved to the fullest extent of the law.

Fuck bullies.

Expel the lot of them and seek any charges they can.

Any school that doesn't do the first at the very least is a shit school and is just yet more proof that schools are extremely unwilling to actually stop bullying.

And when they do it's like

"Two unpopular students beat up one kid, the kid finally fights back, suspend them all for a week or more, ignore that the one who fought back had been reporting them for months or years"

Heaven forbid it involve a sports player.

As a teacher, you can't just expel for any reason because the law guarantees free and appropriate education. For things like bringing a gun, then yeah, it can be done, but even something like hitting a teacher will get like a 180 day suspension. Now that is effectively an expulsion because they are basically referred to alternate schools because there is no way they will pass being suspended that long, but it's not really an expulsion.

Anyways, ISS is bs and should be at least 10 days OSS for bullying. Possibly longer depending on past behavior. But expulsion would probably get reversed anyways.

I wouldn't really call this "any reason", and it is the relatively minor punishments you suggest that just perpetuate bullying in the end. 10 days might seem severe, but to these kids it is just a small and temporary punishment and I fully imagine they will/would just go right back to it. Expulsion might be severe for just a bit of "light" bullying, but this was way beyond it and they need to have severe consequences so they realise that it won't be tolerated. A much longer suspension at least should be warranted, not just effectively detention.

The only way a school will legit do something is if someone died. Other than that.. .ya no.

Besides, complaining to the school about bullying usually just makes it worse because now the bullies are pissed off that you snitched so they're going to bully you even more.

Because schools aren't allowed to do shit anymore as far as discipline is concerned.

Zero tolerance prevents kids from sticking up for themselves without punishment.

It's one giant hypocrisy cause parents are too protective of their asshole kids and always say, "not my child!!!".

It's just ineffective.

I mean, a the nerdy kid with glasses got beat up by a bully. What do you do?

You suspend the bully. Then what? The bullies' friends now see the nerdy kid with glasses as the jerk who dared get the school involved because he's not man enough to fight his own battles, and he got their friend suspended. So if they weren't bullying him at first, they're probably going to start then.

In fact, pretty much anything the school does will likely end up making the bullying victim even more a target.

The problem is that schools tend to treat instances of bullying as isolated incidents instead of seeing them as a whole. Like a kid got beat up one day, or things like that. But the real problem is the microagressions. Little things, pushes and shoves, every single day. That's the day-to-day reality, and each particular incident is just not serious enough to do anything about.

But then what do you do about it?

The principal comes in the class to have a talk and threaten the bullies? Then the victim becomes a snitch who went to tell and so he gets bullied even more.

I doubt this was the case but if any of the bullies in this situation have an IEP (for learning disability or any behavior disorder) the school legally cannot do anything even if it's at the expense of the student's/teacher's safety. They have to call the cops and have them take care of it.
