Although I applied to a few jobs, I was mostly thrilled after graduation at the prospect of having entire days free to focus on drawing and reading. I ended up being employed a little over a month later.

Graduated in December and I had an internship that I was still working even after graduating that lasted until April.

Then got accepted for a full time job somewhere in I think early July.

Started the job in August

I got a job immediately after college but it was a shitty liquor store job. I made the most of it and ended up managing three stores, but the pay ceiling was pretty low. I was only making about $15. My plan was to get on board with a distributor as a salesman, but an opportunity to put my construction skills to work in structural mechanics popped up and I've been doing that ever since.

My university still calls me up asking for alumni donations. My answer is the same every time. "I'll come deliver the first dollar I ever make with that university degree in person."

I had a tentative offer letter about a month after graduation, then another couple of months of background check, doctor visit, etc. before I started
all in all about 5 months which was perfect since it meant I was able to enjoy my "last" summer

You're from NJ right? Did you go to Rutgers?

Sucks that your story is so common in NY and NJ. It's now going to get worst in NY because free college further devalues my degrees and increases the tax burden. Fucking shit state. At least NJ is trying to legalize weed.

Close, I went to Montclair State University. I'm also a bit older than most here, I graduated in 2008 which was an absolute shit time for recent college grads. The recession had just decimated the job market and the demand for a 22 year old with a degree was basically nill. So I ended up with a shit job, but a shit job is better than no job.

in my case, one was govt and one was a university-affiliated research center

so there was not a lot of leverage to be had; when i told the UARC what my govt offer was (+ padding) they laughed at me and said 'our offer will be higher'

Yeah, I think we're the same age. I'm 31. People suffered back then and now my younger family and the families of friends are going through similar shit. It never really got better tbh. Many left the state and are now situated far and wide.

i graduated undergrad at the same time, and found the decision to go to grad school a very easy one

esp considering i was able to swing a fellowship, so it paid better than the actual jobs i could have gotten

After undergrad I didn't really have a legit job for a year. But I was also just a bum not really looking because I knew I was going back to grad school.

At grad school I actually had a job offer, several, before graduating and I still haven't actually finished my thesis.

Two thirds of the people I associated with in my early 20s no longer live in New Jersey in my early 30s, and the ones that are still here either inherited houses or work for the government on some level- because if you live in the state of New Jersey and DON'T work for the government, frankly you're a huge sucker. Your family is coughing up ~$10,000 every year in property taxes to fund other people's retirements. I'm probably going to be in eastern Texas before 2019 rolls around.

Looking at a calendar and trying to remember back:
Graduated Dec. 16, 2004
Had 3 job offers upon graduation. Job offer I accepted I received Jan. 7, 2005.
Start date was February 25, 2005 because of drug tests, background check, interim security clearances, etc.
