A very naive poster seems to think that it's common procedure for NYPD cops to return illegal weapons to their owners. It's really strange. But then again it's probably a the result of "never admit your wrong online" attitude.

To clarify some things, after reading these posts:
This is NOT a gravity knife. The officers said that mistakenly or to scare me into compliance.

The security officers did tell me I cannot bring the multitool in. They did not tell me, nor offer me, the checking of the multitool, hence the argument started.

The police officers were the ones that went to the counter to tell them to hold it for me.

My beef is not really with the police officers (with the exception that they "lied" to me about this being a gravity knife), since they "forced" the employees to hold my multitool for me, but rather with the poor handling of the situation with the security officers.

Also, this is clearly a tool and not a weapon. I do not carry this multitool as a way to defend myself; I carry this multitool in case I need a tool for whatever reason. I'm not sure why some people in this topic thought I carry this multitool strictly for the knife part and for protection... If that's the case why not carry a pocket knife or a gun?

Hard to believe it's considered trolling when all it takes to beat you in an argument is literally in the OP. But hey, if crying "troll" helps ease your mental distress, then go for it.

Not to mention the "is he still going at it" quip when all I'm doing is responding

With enough lubricant or Wd-40, you can basically turn the knife on a Leatherman into a gravity knife. So the officer was right -- he could "technically" argue that you had a gravity knife if you were going to be difficult. He was hoping you'd get the hint and stop arguing about something so dumb as wanting to bring a weapon into an anti-terrorism memorial.

The officer claimed it is a gravity knife, which is indeed illegal in NYC.

However, the multitool knife is not a gravity knife.

A gravity knife is a knife with a blade contained in its handle, and which opens its blade by the force of inertia or gravity. This multitool knife has to be pulled out using your fingertips. It does not just fall into place with gravity alone.

1) it wasn't illegal under new york state or city law.

2) you should have just turned it over. Places are allowed to have policies on what can and can not enter the their venues.

3) I'm 100% certain you were never going to be arrested but the cop was about to get a free Leatherman.

4) liberal cesspools as someone said earlier actually often have more friendly knife laws than red states. Notably CA and Oregon have some of the most lax laws in the country.

5) if you're going to carry know the laws and don't carry anything illegal. If stopped by a cop explain the law and why your knife isn't illegal. If the cop arrests you get a lawyer. If the cop says they need to confiscate it and don't make an arrest demand a receipt, get a badge and car number.

That sucks. I grew up always carrying a knife. I don't near as often now because if I decide to go to a baseball game or a hockey game spur of the moment they don't have a place to check em. I feel like most places should.

That said I wouldn't really blame the security all that much either. I've worked security before and unless there is a system in place I would definitely have been in trouble if my boss found out I was holding someone's personal property for them.

Im not sure why they called the cops but all and all it just seems like it was a shitty situation.

This

I used to have the tiniest knife on my keychain. Took it off because technically its a weapon and if I wanted to I could absolutely do damage with it. Because of that a lot of places probably wouldn't let it through security, fairly I might add. It's just a safety thing, makes perfect sense. Not a big deal I just took it off and wasn't a crybaby about it.

There is no way a leatherman is a fucking "gravity knife."

Granted you should have just handed it over to begin with.

But that is not a gravity knife, a gravity knife requires one hand to open and basically flicks open in an instant (much like a switchblade tbh).

No way in hell you are getting the knife out of a leatherman w/o using both hands.

New York penal law defines the gravity knife as any knife with a blade released from the handle or sheath thereof by the force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force which, when released, is locked in place by means of a button, spring, lever, or other device.

A Leatherman does not fall into the above definition.

The TC still should have just turned in his leatherman and not made a fuss, but gravity knife a leatherman is NOT.

Look, the broken record player finally got fixed. I think he's learned some new phrases.

Another point of evidence against you is the fact that you're clearly trying to draw attention from others, with things like "look at this guy" and speaking indirectly, as opposed to simply standing your ground in your case.

I don't even feel right chalking this up as a W because 90% of what I said was literally quoted from TC himself...

There you go. Now refute it. Or are you going to go back into broken record mode?
