he wont eat. he doesn't seem to be starving but he has barely touched his food in like 3 days. but he acts happy. however he is super needy, constantly underfoot and following me around and meowing. I have no idea what he is after

Keep an eye on it, cats start going into kidney failure without food and the lack of appetite is a symptom

Try cleaning out the food dish really well and offering some kind of special treats like meat

after seeing this post, I emptied his bowl and washed it. then opened a brand new sample bag (I recently got a bunch of free sample bags from the vet when I went and they didn't have a normal one to sell me) and he got all excited as I was getting it ready and then ran to the bowl....and took 1 bite and left.

Is he very old? I just took my mom's older cat to the vet because it was overactive, ate a ton but puked a lot ( A lot of furballs...she is a long haired cat), but still very thin.

She had to have thyroid surgery and has now calmed down, able to keep things down, not over grooming and gaining weight.

I've seen him drink I think

he is like 7 or something. he's never had health problems before except that he had a urine stone once and now eats this special food. and when I got him his teeth were gone cause they had to be removed. other than, he's a normal cat.

he still runs around and plays. like I said, he seems happy. he just doesn't seem to be eating much. he nibbles. my dad said maybe he just eats when I am sleeping but the food isn't really going away.

This. It's to see if he has an appetite or not. Not that you should feed him it all the time. A slice offered now is better than cat going hungry for days.

No appetite means vet time

Ok he's being a picky b about his food. It happens. If this is a recent thing it might be slightly stale food.

My cat with stones hated his dry food so I mixed it with wet prescription food and a bit of water. Water intake is really important for cats with crystals.

You can also buy freeze dried liver powder which you can shake tiny amounts on to food to make it more appealing. That's one way to entice. Works for a lot of cats.

it's dry food. he's used to that though. he usually won't eat wet good. or at least he doesn't finish it. so it's a waste. he just licks until all the juices are gone and leaves the rest to dry out. I have some cans but I haven't used them in a while. they are still good for about another year.

yea. he was surrendered to a shelter with horrible teeth problems. and they decided to just take them all out. it was already all over and dealt with when I first met him. his gums are hard and he uses that to crunch his food. most of the time I forget he doesn't have teeth. he acts like a normal cat. he just can't bite you

maybe consult with your vet if your cat wont eat wet food but has no teeth.

alternatively, you could add water to the hard food to soften it up when you put it out.

do they make cat food similar to the dog food they have where if you add water it makes gravy? i'm not sure.

Is he used to this brand of food too?

With all his teeth gone you probably would benefit from saucing his food to help him eat

Eh I've seen more than a few toothless animals handle dry food. But moistening it usually helped.

well that's not a very good thing, regardless.

take some dry food, and add a little water or milk to them so they soften up a bit and see if he'll eat that.

otherwise, wet food would be the way to go. in your case, give him only a quarter of a can or half, for breakfast and dinner. and just save the rest in the fridge for next time. even if he doesn't eat all of it at once, that's fine.

i'd give me cat a whole can at once and he'd eat it periodically throughout the day. they aren't like us who eat several big meals a day, they just eat whenever.

Tezlok posted...

yeah, but take dry cereal and mash it against the roof of your mouth with your tongue. it hurts a bit, right?

now do that when its gotten soggy with milk. it's easy, right?

apply that to a toothless animal eating dry food

Yeah but it's not the urinary crystal food the cat needs.

I used to make my cat homemade chicken stock, no salt, no onions or garlic. Turned it into kitty gravy. He liked that.

They claim that fully toothless cats don't suffer at all when eating dry food. The roof of a cat's mouth really is intensely hard.

Unrelated, toothless cats are so adorable when they try to bite and just gum you.

Tuna is actually a very dangerous Gambit with cats. They can become addicted to tuna because of a certain protein that really screws them up.

maybe some don't but i feel that'd be individual and something that'd be determined under examination from people who know the cat.

zikten is asking for help because his cat is having a problem so if the cat is having a problem eating dry food moistening isn't a bad thing to say.
