The goal of a university is increasing their profit margin. But whats the goal for most people trying to get a college degree? Its so they can land a good job. No one said education for its own sake is a bad thing, but lets not pretend most people without academic interests goes to college for education for its own sake as opposed trying to land prospective employment so they can be functioning adults

Let's not pretend that this degree wouldn't be useful in any field whatsoever, or that all universities are in greedy-ass Murrica

And people may go to a mechanic and complain that their table service was awful, but perhaps they shouldn't have gone to the mechanic expecting to be served food.

Sure, nothing is binary. But how likely is it this degree will lead to gainful employment or other uses compared to other degrees? How likely is it a university isnt greedy? Probably not as likely as the other scenario

What? Im missing something here, can you elaborate what you mean? Are you saying its a bad idea for people to want a degree for employment opportunities because thats not what college is about?

I took a Celtic literature class, but it wasn't my major. It was a good class. I guess everyone should try to work in factories for $15/hour then complain when a CEO moves the job to Mexico. Maybe you should hustle as hard as you hate.

I'm saying that people who go to college simply for the sake of employment, expecting the university to provide a direct path to employment, have misunderstood what they signed up for.

I'm saying that to the extent to which this is the expectation is the extent to which unfortunate market forces are allowing administration of universities to use their power and influence to force curriculum and funding in that direction, since people are more likely to attend if they are told they will get a job after.

I imagine it will lead to gainful employment for someone who's going to specialize or teach in that field, and likely plans to go for their Master's or Doctorate.

And sure, all unis get their money somewhere, but many if not most are not like the US, in that the students pay little to no tuition and indeed receive money to attend.

If thats not what college is for, then most people got duped, and these universities are even more vile than I realized for pushing this cultural idea that you need a college degree for gainful employment.

It's not nearly that simple nor is it actually true that universities are pushing that idea lol.

None-the-less, there does need to be a cultural shift to maintain the university systems, increased access but decreased cultural pressure to attend.

Uni prices are way over priced. Univerisity of Miami can be around 60K a year for tutition fees. I don't see the majority of young students going to uni just learn something if they're just gonna be in debt for the rest of their life.

If you're an older student who's financially stable then getting uni knowledge may appeal to you but every uni student I know are hoping to use their degree for career related reasons.
