Light turns his gaze to the US military because they have openly declared war on the being known as "Kira".

Due to L's and Near's findings, the US military know Kira is an individual who lives in Japan.
Light does everything in his power to kill every last member of the US military, prioritizing the higher ups.

No Nukes. No martial law.

The military wouldn't really be able to discover him without mass bombing Japan. Light, on the other hand, would almost certainly never be able to kill every single member of the military.

If you simplify it to just Light defeating the military, he easily wins.

Now if I write down Ryuzaki, the first thing that will pop in my head would be that idol guy and I would automatically kill him instead. Curses, everything is not keikaku."

IIRC L didn't actually change his name to Ryuzaki, it was just an alias.

But that does bring up an interesting point. Was there a rule in the DN that stated that someone's birth name was their real name and thus legally changing it wouldn't matter?

I don't think that was a rule since nobody ever exploited that but there's this one:

This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.

Therefore, Light cannot write the same name down as him since he'll consciously think of his face instead of the US army personel. Checkmate. Now can Light solo the North Korean army would be more interesting as information would be harder to obtain.

The rules discovered by L are highly publicized. After Light kills the service men that have had their names and faces in the media in previous the rest won't and will just blow up the entire nation to get at him.
