We all know that when self-driving cars hit their stride we will see dramatic reduction of motor accident deaths. Why don't we do something similar for guns? It is impossible to get rid of guns in USA. But what if

Smart guns are created were they map their location, can only be fired by person with correct ID signature thereby making the gun useless upon theft. We can all agree that schools are not a place that guns should ever be fired correct? So what if in a world all guns are smart guns, these guns will alert police of firing or even shut off in certain locations?

This will require:
1. Ban all obsolete guns from manufacture, import and ownership
2. Arrest anyone with refusal to get rid of obsolete guns.

In time this policy will effectively keep Americans armed but get rid of obsolete guns.

It is determined that humans are too reckless and don't deserve too much choice in arming themselves.

Pro: reduce ease of mass shootings
con: reduction in liberty where one can fire guns, vulnerable to obsolete gun black market criminals.

It is my hope that eventually we will have police drones and robots, and other automated security systems in place to eliminate mass shootings.

Valid concern, hackers can be a problem. Will be interesting to see how self-driving cars handle it. I can say if it gets to the point were you have to hack a gun we have increased the barrier of entry and reduced ease of committing a mass shooting.

I suppose it would deter the shooters that just really aren't into the idea. But if somebody is determined to kill people then they will make the gun usable. It's really only slowing it down.

You just want a civil war, huh?

Americans can still own their guns. The smart guns will still be lethal weapons good for hunting, sport, killing..

Though arrest is pretty harsh, there can be an extreme fine. But this system requires armed Americans to switch to smart guns.

I'm sure there will be people who will also hate the idea of having no control of their driving, yet it looks like self-driving cars will be inevitable.

1) these "smart" guns will be more expensive. no one will buy them

2) even if they weren't more expensive... most gun owners don't want any of that technology

ban them. every last God damn one of them

All the major players are involved. Apple, Google, Tesla, Uber. Most of the large auto manufactures have plans for self-driving cars. It is the modern space race. I have no doubt that in the future if it is seen how much safer self-driving cars are and how integrated they become with our streets, roads and cities that eventually manual driving will be discouraged and even banned.
Maybe self-driving cars will be the catalyst of envisioning what other aspects of our society can given control to the computer.

1) I'm pretty sure microprocessors were not as affordable before as they are now. Technology becomes cheaper in time. See the invention of the smart phone and all its features that could never have been thought so affordable as it is now.
2) There will always be people who don't want the future of technology eventually they will die out.

Pretty huge If. It is more likely, after the first major rash of casualties due to self driving cars (which is also inevitable), that the self driving cars will be banned.

Welp we will have to wait and see who is right.

There's more guns than people in this country. They aren't going away. You can ban them all you want, that doesn't make them disappear. This country is always going to be armed. Always. The solution to stopping school shootings is simple and low tech.

Put a freaking cop in the school. It's not complicated.

This doesn't ban guns, nor is it disarming people. This is upgrading the guns, and eliminating the fools too stubborn to change. A cop in every school would be nice, but if such a simple solution hasn't been done now...

I don't see how this is different from the 'outright ban all guns NOW' idea that's thrown around nowadays, which, while it worked for the world, wouldn't work for America since guns are already widespread.

There's no way this can be properly enforced, what with the tons of guns already in circulation and hidden away somewhere. Antique guns, smuggled guns and jury-rigged guns will still cause problems and they won't be decreasing, at least not in appreciable levels.
