Not really. Gun deaths are going down. But im not you pretending to care either

Cool. Youre more likely to be killed on the street or by someone you know with a pistol than you are at school....

Cool. And you are almost as likely to be killed attending school in the US than the next 36 countries combined. And these numbers are back from 2012 before the recent swath of school shootings. But yeah, nothing to see here, nbd...

Again gun deaths are on the decline and also you only want to ban the scary guns. Not the ones that have the highest murder rate. Its okay you're posting with feelings i get it

So you don't even fully know what you want banned?

This is why no one takes these viewpoints seriously. You want something banned, but you don't even know what the hell it is you want banned

Sadly I've seen this more times than I can count from users on this board

Ok

So I'm right and you acknowledge it

I just told you. Pistols and hunting rifles are fine. Do you need a detailed diagram of each and every gun? You're just going for "gotcha" tactics now to justify your need to "feed your family" with weapons designed to kill lots of people very quickly.

So... the gun type most responsible for all murders is okely-dokely, but the one responsible for <1% of them is a huge problem, directly linked to all forms of cancer?

For the same price as your average AR I could get a 9mm glock and 3 50rd drums, ammo for it and clothes to conceal it in. It's why the pistol is the most common murder weapon.

A lot of the response I've seen has been to just "ban guns" in full, which is never going to work in America despite other countries implementing it effectively. If democrats are actually proposing effective laws, then that is good.

Well, I live in a country that banned guns in the wake of a school shooting and it got them out of circulation for the most part.

Now, that wouldn't work in America as people are fanatical about their guns but I would suggest tighter regulation on getting a gun to begin with. Needing an evaluation and medical approval from a doctor, training being mandatory (and being upkept) better gun training/handling taught in schools maybe (in the sense so children are more aware of the dangers of them) certain guns used for hunting being harder to get and you needing to prove that you are a hunter to own them. Far harsher punishments for illegal ownership as well, so it has serious consequences.

In the real world? Yea, you're probably right

For discussion on CE the left mainly just laughs and shrugs off any type of discussion except for "ban guns"

So far solutions I have seen brought up are tighter school security, metal detectors, better mental health regulations, better parenting, having trained teachers be able to conceal carry, a few tighter restrictions on how you can buy weapons, and having more gun education available to people

No one here that I have seen has entertained anything other than "Nope, needs to be banned", so you're left with a side that doesn't want to have a discussion and just wants another chance to say "Thoughts and Prayers" sarcastically

I really doubt that much of those would stand up in court, except the last one. Felons and loons caouht with guns do need to be punished a bit more severely.

As is, it's up to 10 years, or fifteen if a felon has been caught with a gun three times already.

Whoops, that one means that minorities would go to jail. Sorry, you're racist now, try again.

Seriously though...some people actually think like that. Any time someone tries to bring up stricter penalties and/or stringent enforcement of gun laws here in Chicago it inevitably hits poor minority communities harder and people start screaming racism. Just in case you were wondering why huge chunks of the south/west side of Chicago are open-air shooting galleries in the summer.

And that's what baffles me about America.

They idolise guns to the point where they are content to see children routinely massacred and not actually even try anything to stop it. It is just becoming another event in the news you ignore, it is starting to feel, and don't even really spend a moment to actually think about. Other countries immediately took action in the wake of school shootings and saw massive reductions in gun violence. So why can't America try to do something about it, even if not as harsh as other countries outright bans?

SideshowBob311 posted...

I say just ignore them and implement much stricter punishments regardless. Even first offence should see severe punishment (unless it is just like a lapse in upkeeping your record or something)

Nah. It's idolizing the constitution. The whole point of that thing is to evade tyranny, and a government that ignores its own charter "for your own good" is pretty much the definition of tyranny already.

Banning guns just needs 38 states to ratify repealing the 2nd amendment.

It still seems a crazy idolisation to me. Who cares that some men 200+ years ago said guns were for all tbh? You can still have guns as something citizens can own, but have restrictions on them for the safety of the populace when you having massacres that feel almost commonplace.

We already do.

Full-auto guns made after 1986 are completely illegal, and ones made before have a significant ($10000 or so) tax for transfer.
Rounds larger than 50-caliber are outright banned.
Buying a firearm from a store almost always requires a background check, and occasionally a waiting-period.
Buying a handgun out of state requires that gun being shipped to a FFL in the buyer's state.
Suppressors ("silencers") require $200 and annoying paperwork.
Adding a shoulder stock to a handgun also requires $200 and annoying paperwork.

I heard someone on talk radio this morning suggest a minimum age of 21 for semi-auto purchases.
It's not going to do a hell of a lot of good when some crazy kid steals his parents' guns, but it may have actually stopped (or slowed down) this guy.

I don't even particularly like the idea, due to "tiered adulthood" being rather silly to me, but it definitely has some merit.
