Even when it was new I thought it was crap. Felt like a ridiculously cheap knock-off of Mario made by people who had only just learnt how to make a game.

Like you said, though, 2 was fantastic, up there with Mario World if you ask me.

It's hard to compare it to other Mario games because it's a fraction of the size. That said, I'd rather play it for 20 minutes to half an hour than to play Lost Levels for that length of time.

Lost Levels is truly the worst 2D platformer in the Mario library. Just because a game is difficult, that doesn't mean it can't be fun. But that one isn't even well structured and it offers nothing new aside from strong gusts of wind and a cloud level background.

Land doesn't even feel like a Mario game. It's has completely messed up jump dynamics and collision detection.

Mario Land 2 was good for a quick Mario fix on the go. Nice level variety and not just a copy pasta of previous games enemy wise.

Super Mario Land is straight garbage. The guy who said it felt like a game on a calculator is completely right.

People dislike SMB2? That has to be some sort of "I was born in 1996 and Super Mario Sunshine was my first Mario." opinion, right?

The first time I actually played Super Mario Land I thought it was a chinese knock off.

The physics are weird, it messes up a lot of iconic Mario stuff (Can Can music replacing the Star Theme, hearts for 1-ups, Fireballs acting like super balls, the weird sphynxs in the first level)

Like it literally felt like a different game that just had Mario slapped on or something.

That is pretty much what it was. I guess people well still getting familiar with what the GB could do back then, the green screen and portability made them underestimate it.

I still enjoy that game a lot

For my money, nothing.

I do think they should have taken five minutes to translate the character names, and I've one reviewer nitpick the jumping mechanics, but I've never had a problem with the game. It's essentially Super Mario Bros. Lite.

It aged like 30 year old yogurt.

Try playing it now, objectively. It highlights just how vastly superior Super Mario Bros was. The mechanics are nearly broken. The level design is terrible. The collision detection with enemies and terrain is like some guy programming a game with visual basic.

The game has Koopas and Goombas. (Sorta.)

I think it was a wise decision to have an original cast of adversaries. I think it disguises the limitations a bit since you don't have expectations as to how many enemies should be on the screen at one time or how they should be arranged.

I love Super Mario Land 2, but there are moments where I feel like I'm playing a lesser version of a console game. The first game doesn't have that problem.

They changed how jumps work in the game as well. I don't remember the specifics but it's actually harder to fix a bad jump and save yourself. I only know of this because I've seen darbian streaming before.

It's been like a year and a half since he did his first successful Mario power hour. 6 games (1, lost levels, 2, 3, world and 64) in under an hour. And all on the same TV, possibly system for the first 4. So he had to be precise with the end run times and immediately having the next game/ system up and running.

I never noticed a difference in jumping. Mario's jumping tends to differ from game to game and it's not like the platforming is exactly hard. You might fall to your death once or twice, but that can happen in any Mario game.
